Are any brands really better than another? We are needing to replace our complete A/C-heating system -- the guy who came today as a "second opinion" sells Ruud & Rheem and gave us a bid for the Ruud while he was here. We'll get a second estimate from the people who gave us the original news that it needed to be changed (they sell Lennox). Also know the dealer who deals with Trane.

That said, is an A/C an A/C? Never had to change one out before.

I prefer Rheem and Lennox.

I've had both. Currently have 2 Rheems and haven't had one issue with either.

I have Rheems and one needed a new coil about 14 months in. Warranty replacement ran smoothly and covered everything except freon. I got fricked on the freon.

I got a new Rheem installed two years ago. Works as advertised and was about $2k less than the quote the Trane guy gave me.

Don't skimp on the thermostat.

I just got an American Standard, its the same as Trane. Been happy with it so far. I think its more about who installs it.

I got carrier a few years ago. So far so good, but it hasn't been long enough to make that call. I've read York is manufacturing the best units these days.

We got a new Lenox unit a year or two ago. Compressor froze after the first year. Guy who came out to fix said the compressors for all the different companies are all basically obtained from the same manufacturer. Honestly not really sure it makes a difference...don't get screwed on price and negotiate a really good warranty deal...

Ive been told Trane and Lennox are the best. Have a Lennox and it works fine.
Maintain it properly and most would probably be good for at least ten years

I have Lennox. Google Lennox class action lawsuit on the coils. I have that problem with 2 of my 3 units. At the time of purchase everyone thought they were the shite. It’s all junk. I would get carrier if I could go back.

Thanks all.

We bought a house in 2014 that has a unit that has a heat pump. Had it checked in July of this year due to it not cooling properly (not awful hot just not right) and they did normal maintenance/cleaning while here; didn't need any freon. They told us there was "some part" (I don't remember what it was) that didn't "switch over correctly" so it wasn't functioning right and the only "fix" was to change the whole unit. I wanted to change it out -- husband opted to wait.

Well "that part" got back to functioning ok until about 3 weeks ago. Guy (different company) came this am and said there isn't a drop of freon in the unit (how does a leak happen between July and now so that there is NO freon??) AND that "some part" (I mean he named it; same part first people said was the problem) wasn't working and that there was a big fat freon leak. He told me about the part before I mentioned that is what the first people said -- he also said the whole thing just needed to be changed.

We'd like to use the guy who came today -- just wasn't sure about the two brands that he sells.

I work in the HVAC field. I'm picking Ruud 10 out of 10 times. Trane is a good unit but the Ruud is the best bang for the buck. Carrier used to be good but they make their condenser coils like aluminum now so they bend super easy. Lennox has terrible evaporator coils and almost seems like they can't handle the pressure of the new 410a refrigerant. I have a Ruud at my house. I installed one at my moms house. It's my go-to for the value. Again Trane is good but you are gonna pay for it.

This makes me feel better -- something from someone in the field. Thanks to you as well as all the others.

eta and it's not like I can take a month and check everything out ... hoping that the big arse cold front that is/was/may come through isn't so bad. lol.

As a part owner of a HVAC company, I can say Trane/American Standard is the best on the market. Their customer service is crap but it's the best unit out there.

Stay away from Goodman. Most of our warranty calls are for Condensers rusting out and leaking in less than a year on the Goodmans.
