Genetics, man. Some people just have it. Some people have it and never use it. Mark Henry was squatting 600 in the eighth grade and totaled over 2,000 as a senior with a squat of 832. As a fourth grader he was 5'5" and 225lbs. He became the first Arnold's Strongman Classic winner while clearly being the strongest of the field. If he had not gone the wrestling route and had stuck with Terry Todd he would probably be the most decorated strength athlete ever. And, if you're inclined to believe him, he was natural during his lifting career.

The guy was just made for it.

It helps with the lift. Some folks can lift a lot more in a suit than raw. I'm guessing he doesn't get that much out of the suit since it looked pretty loose. He was also beltless. He's just strong AF regardless.

I used to be able to squat 30% or so more in a suit. It was so tight I'd about have to be cut out of it, though.

Just think of it as bracing. A suit helps to keep everything in place, especially your innards, and allows you to strain/put more force without fear of causing problems. It braces/supports the core. With a squat it can also give you more pop off the bottom of the lift. For a heavy squat the knees are the big worry, though, which is why so much thought and time is put into the wraps.

They start younger, they are more serious and they have better information available.

I have a 19yo on the cycling team I coach and he is primarily a track cyclist but is the sprinter on our team. He is a certifiable quadzilla capable of 2100 watt explosions. He does gym work separately but he works out with the team in the offseason. He is 5'10" 187 and he does squat reps with 495. I don't let him lift more when he is with me trying to prevent injury. We started doing Bulgarian split squats last year and I caught him doing 315 a couple of weeks ago. All I could do was shake my head and as he noted I hadn't put a limit on them.

The kid lives and breathes power output. Along with all the other advantages the really good kids at anything now have a focus basically unheard of 40 years ago.

The answer is yes. Equipment like that and knee wraps started more so for health like supporting the knee. As time and technology/techniques advanced, the suits and shirts absolutely support someone to get numbers well beyond their raw capacity.

For example, my raw bench was about 315 where in a shirt I was opening with 430 and looking to get about 470-475. Shirts give more assistance on bench probably than suits do on squat. My raw squat was about 500 but equipped was about 646.

The misconception is that the equipment is doing the lifting. Lol. No. The equipment supports you at the bottom, so it is much easier to get more weight moving at the bottom of the lift. By the mid and top of the lift, however, it's pretty well all transitioned back to you. And in any case, you are holding the weight on your back and in your hands. I could almost not even breathe with that weight on squats. And you try holding 430 in your hands.

Ultimately, shite's heavy and you're the one moving it.
