Another CSB ... my friend (who is a little olde than me - 55) was a late in life baby for his father, who was also in 8th AF in WWII.
He was shot down and landed in Poland. He was found by the Russians who returned him to the west via the Balkans, Beirut, Cairo and back around to France and then England.
He has a bad arse pic of his dad and his flight crew in front of the pyramids in Cairo.

I keep in touch with a lot of fighter pilots, none of which have this mentality

and if their bosses do it's with a wink and a nod

Sad to say, I've seen plenty of fighter and bomber pilots get stars and then become clerks. In the last 5 years or so, the good ones eventually got fired or put out to pasture at O-6 for towing the party line

I do a lot of reunions with former Vietnam POWs, my favorite is the Freedom Flyers reunion at Randolph, one thing I love about this one, and the Freedom Flyers are well aware, is that the younger guys see the bond, tradition, and purpose, and it kind of keeps it alive

Is that your uncles pic... awesome
Yes that is my great uncle's picture. He is not the one shaking General Anderson's had. He is the second from the left in the picture.
ETA: Here he is shaking the general's hand.

ETA: Here is a picture of his side of the cockpit after the shell hit.

So many potential great men thrown into the wood chipper.
By potential, I don't mean they weren't showing greatness then, I meant more potential business leaders, fathers, doctors, ect.

Oh I understand what you meant. Families destinies were altered forever. For a generation that was an empty place at Christmas dinner.
My Dad had an uncle who was killed in France in Aug. of 1918. I don't think my grandparents ever quite got over it.

We went to that museum back @ 2002. It was fantastic.
