Damn I miss cheery bombs! They were so much fun. The fuzzes would stay lit under water.
The big joke in Jr High was to set them off in the bathroom. The metal stall dividers had a great reverb. Cigarettes could be placed over the fuse to act as a delayed fuse. I remember a vice principle walking in as one went off. Possession of cherry bombs at school instantly became a capital offense.
Blowing up mail boxes was a very popular gag.

The Atomic Energy Lab kit produced by the American Basic Science Club came with real samples of uranium (which is radioactive) and radium (which is a million times more radioactive than uranium). Since the mere presence of radioactive material in a children’s product clearly wasn’t insane enough, some of the experiments detailed in the manual also required kids to handle blocks of dry ice. Dry ice, by the way, has a temperature of minus 109.3 degrees Fahrenheit, and it’s recommended that it only be handled while wearing gloves (none were included).
Got one of these when I was 5.

Major disappointment in my chemistry set when I discovered there were no explosive recipes.
Ah, but I inherited a real chemistry set with a manual printed just post WW1 that included all the good stuff.

My dad told me my uncle got a bow and arrow set one year for Xmas. They used to go in the yard, shoot it straight up, and play chicken when it was coming down. ...the good ole days.

Loved the hell out of the creepy crawler maker. Spent hours with my siblings and burning the hell out of our fingers. Good times.

quote:when I was in 6th or 7th grade a friend got hold of a bunch of "quicksilver" (liquid mercury) from his dad's supply cabinet (was a military doc or druggist). I got him to give me some. We quickly learned you could shine up quarters very nicely with it. And you could be mobbed by envious kids who wanted to feel it and hold some in their hands. But then a teacher got wind of what me and my friend had, and quickly put an end to our new-found popularity. We were directed to take the stuff home, not touch it or play around with it - that it was dangerous. Having no idea why, I was ticked off by this reprimand. By the time I got home my Mom somehow got word that I had it. Her solution for the problem was to dig a small hole in the back yard, pour it in, and then cover it with dirt. She made me an offer I could not refuse. I complied, but I didn't like it.
Nothing beat playing with the mercury when a thermometer would break.

Reading the original article one of the glass blowing experiments is "blow a bubble of glass until it pops in your face" that is hilariously dumb.

The ol' ankle breaker- somehow you'd find every single hole in a lawn.

I had a bow and arrow set, and like a lot of people here I enjoyed shooting it straight up into the air. That is until it came down and landed about one foot in front of my father as he was walking out of the garden shed one day. He broke the bow in half and beat my arse.

I got a wood burning kit of all the NFL helmets when I was 8 and burned the frick out of my hand, LOL. I learned quickly how to handle that "toy" very quickly. Became a pro by 9. No pain, no gain.
