Mt. Suribachi had fallen to the 3rd Marine Division around 10:30 in the morning on February 23, 1945. U.S. Army and Marines had been fighting on and around the mountain since the battle began back on February 19. When Mt. Suribachi was declared secured by the marines at the summit, an American flag was raised on the mountain's highest point.

When the marines on island and sailors off-shore caught sight of the red, white, and blue rising above Mt. Suribachi, a loud cheer echoed throughout the battlefield as tens of thousands of men celebrated the capture of the island's highest point. Among those celebrating was Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal, who had just arrived on the island to witness the final phase of the Mt. Suribachi operation. He immediately announced that he wanted the American flag that now waved over the island for his personal collection.

The flag was shortly thereafter taken down for the SECNAV while another was put up in its place. This second flag raising, though unnoticed by just about everyone else on the island, was witnessed by combat photographer Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press. This photograph has now passed on into legend:

The battle, however, was far from over. Within weeks of the taking of this photograph, half the men in it would be dead from wounds received from combat. Every man in the photograph would receive the Medal of Honor, with the surviving flag raisers given a furlough to the United States to help sell war bonds.

Ira Hayes.
Call him drunken Ira Hayes.
He won't answer anymore.
Not the whiskey drinking Indian.
Or the marine that went to war...

Correct me if I am wrong but I think they raised the flag and realized no photo was taken so they did a retake and did it a second time for the camera.

There was an old guy from my hometown, friends with my dad, both Marines. This old friend was present and about 20 feet away and missed being in the picture.

A second guy from our parish was about 50 feet away. Neither of them knew each other at the time but soon found out they were both from the same area.

Yeah, little known fact that this was a staged photo. Still an icon of America nonetheless.

I must admit, I wish I fought along them. Greatest humans that will ever walk this earth.

That pic truly illustrates what a bunch of pissed off leathernecks on a remote Pacific island with no crayons to eat are capable of.

But in all seriousness, hats off to a bunch of young men who have done more for this country than I could ever hope to. As an Air Force guy and the older brother of a Marine, I can't help but give them shite.

I respect them as a branch more than any other. Never had a desire to be one.

YUT!!

Incorrect. There is photo and video of the first flag going up. The second flag raising video/photograph was pure chance and and happenstance. The only reason it happened is because the Secretary of the Navy wanted the first flag for his office wall.

Not so much staged - it was a reenactment.
