Then, five months later he did it again. He expected to be courtmartialed for dereliction of duty, and perhaps should have been, but he was deemed indispensable to the war effort. At any rate, wearher forecasting was hit or miss in those days.

Typhoon Cobra, the first tropical cyclone ever captured on radar.

Admiral Halsey notified me
He had to have a berth or he couldn't get to sea
I had another look and I had a cup of tea and butter pie (butter pie)
The butter wouldn't melt so I put it in the pie

Halsey was an idiot.

The only reason we won Midway was his being in a hospital bed in Pearl Harbor.

With the overwhelming might of the mid-1942 Japanese fleet sailing east to destroy what was left of the US Pacific Fleet, Halsey got himself confined to sick bay due to a 'skin disorder'. I would imagine it manifested itself with a large yellow stripe down his back.

I wouldn't go that far, but I'm a firm believer that Spruance deserved a fifth star more than Halsey did. It's a shame the former never got one.

Well, at least he got a Cold War ship class named for him: Spruance-class destroyers

All 31 Spruance-class destroyers were built at Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding, Pascagoula, Mississippi. They were the first US Navy ship class powered with gas turbines...

Halsey was overrated. His actions during the Battle of Leyte Gulf were almost calamitous. But to suggest that he backed down from a fight is silly.

He was good and aggressive for tactical operations.

Strategy was not his boat though.

Halsey is the Navy’s MacArthur.

His absurd handling of Leyte Gulf and the two typhoons is up there with MacArthur’s incompetence, but each of them were protected because of how critical they were to overall morale and because of the tough, never-say-die attitude they exuded.

For those looking to read-up on America’s famous admirals, The Admirals is an incredible book. Most know of Nimitz and Halsey, but learning about Leahy and King was fascinating to me.

Several ships reported men overboard, and the carriers in the group reported planes on fire on their hangar decks. By this time, the barometer, which had been falling steadily since 0500, read 29.42, and we were wallowing in a quartering sea.

At 1130, the word was passed to put on lifejackets. I didn’t think a jacket would do much good with waves towering 50 feet above the ship and winds howling at more than 150 miles per hour. At 1145, sound-powered telephone circuits began to fail. The ship’s rolls had increased to a consistent 65° and the barometer was still going down. Spray driven like sheets of needles before the blinding wind peeled the ship’s paint and cut the faces of the men huddled on the bridge. The ship’s inclinometer registered 75° on several occasions.

Fellas...read the story in the op's link... Holy crap that crew went through hell

It's not a take, it's the truth. Did Washington step down before Yorktown with a case of psoriasis? What about Meade at Gettysburg? McAuliffe at Bastogne? Psoriasis?

That's exactly what happened before Midway. Believe it or not.
