Even after the second bomb, there was an attempted coup by Japanese military leaders to overthrow Hirohito and keep fighting. There was a large faction of that population who wanted to literally fight to the last person. They were training kids how to fight hand to hand combat in case the Americans started invading their cities. It took two nuclear bombs and the threat of the Soviets coming from the north to get them to finally quit.

It's a good thing that they weren't aware we didn't have any more bombs ready.

Terrible but ironically it probably saved many more lives than it took.

Well stated.

A necessary tragedy.

Ridiculous accuracy from that height.

Especially considering the technology of the time and the incredibly uncomfortable conditions the crew were facing.

The Norden bombsight was a triumph in technological engineering. Variations of the original design are still used today on our B-52 bombers. As for the conditions the crew of the Enola Gay were facing, they encountered no resistance in the skies above Hiroshima. They were cruising at an altitude of some 31,000 feet - far above the maximum range of flak artillery or fighter interceptors. They were virtually untouchable up there and the bomb run was peaceful and flawless.

You can’t be serious. 9/11 was nowhere close to the equivalent of a nuclear detonation.

Yeah, we call it 9/11.

No, as horrible as that day was, it is nowhere near equivalent to dropping an atomic bomb.

Those bombs destroyed entire cities. 9/11 took down a couple blocks.

Referring to the pressure, lack of sleep, etc.

Of course there was no enemy resistance to speak of.

I agree, but I quoted the part where innocent civilians were killed. America lost 3000 innocent civilians on that tragic day. I don’t see how losing more civilians that day would have caused a different reaction.

A nuclear bomb in Manhattan would’ve killed millions. It would’ve been 9/11 times 2356.

I agree with your assessment of the shock value of 9/11, but 3,000 dead, as terrible as it was, is nowhere near 2 or 3 million dead had a nuclear bomb detonated in NYC instead.

Thinking about how old I am now it blows my mind that currently that was 49 years before my birth. In a little over 10 years I will be as old as the atomic bomb was on the day of my birth. Wild.

So you’re 39. Got it

If what he is saying is right, then he is 26 years old. 1945+49=1994

2020-1994=26

26+10=36

36=/=49

Pops probably would have bought it in the Invasion in ‘46.

amazes me how much they changed after the war despite having the same Emperor from 1926-1989.

It was more Hideki Tojo running the show than the emperor anyways

And even though I wasn't on this earth yet, I don't feel guilty. The Japs were never going to surrender and it probably did save more lives in the long run had the war not ended. I feel for the innocent victims and the children who were just going on with their normal day during wartime but every other European country lost innocent lives as well and thankful that the US developed the bomb first. I shudder to think what the Germans might have done with it first.

I was listening to the radio this morning and they were talking about this very topic and how books by Howard Zinn who is anti American are being taught now in middle and high schools not just college.

He (Zinn) says it didn't save any lives. The end result by his books being taught before college is being displayed in cities all over the country especially Portland and Seattle.

I teach in a small town in Southern New Jersey where Trump received the highest vote per capita in NJ and his books are in our curriculum. I am not a History teacher but if its being taught in my school its being taught every where (public not private).

Howard Zinn

Needs to be stricken from history. His book, poorly cited and seemingly goes out of its way to take events completely out of context, has done much to destroy the American History curriculum. Children aren't being properly taught their nation's history anymore.
