It must have completely sunk because you can't even see it from the picture in the article.

Clarence Thomas was from that community.

If anybody can get tide times on average for this site, add on for higher high tide and lower low tide as Th. night was full moon.
I lived and fished here for a lot of years and the tides/currents are no joke. Tide chart for yesterday shows high tide was 9.18' at 10:17am and low tide at -0.05' at 4:52pm. That's a frick ton of water moving in/out of the sound. Prayers for the families, lots of good people down there on the coast.

Here's a link to the satellite view of the ferry landing.
LINK
(The address is too long to show the pix)
The published locations are wrong, it's not on the Atlantic side but inland at the south end of the island on a feeder stream to the 'river' that runs east-west

So, it would have been the dock/gangway at the end of that Marsh Landing Road?

But the community’s population has been shrinking for decades, and some families have sold their land to outsiders who built vacation homes. Tax increases and zoning changes by the local government in McIntosh County have been met by protests and lawsuits by Hogg Hummock residents and landowners.
They have been battling for the past year to undo zoning changes approved by county commissioners in September 2023 that doubled the size of homes allowed in Hogg Hummock.
Residents say they fear larger homes will lead to tax increases that could force them to sell land their families have held for generations.
I mean…you could take that section and apply it to any group of people who have lived in the same place for generations regardless of race.
Still not seeing the in the article where they were “making it about racism or oppression” as you put it.

Everybody on it probably slid down the incline. If there were a lot of people on it at the time, the ones on the bottom of the pile could easily drown, especially with a lot of elderly involved.

The Gullah population there still lives very much like they did 100 years ago. The island is not accessible by road, only by boat. Utilities have been slow to get out there. The population is dwindling because the kids grow up, find out about life outside the island, and say frick going back to my slave shack, I like this apartment and McDonald's and internet and indoor plumbing. The only industry there is eco-tourism. It's a beautiful natural unspoiled place that looks just like it did 500 years ago, as do many of Georgia's "Golden Isles" with little to no development.

Melvin Amerson, the McIntosh County coroner, identified the names on Sunday afternoon. All seven were visitors to the island:
Carlotta McIntosh, 93, of Jacksonville, Fla.; Charles L. Houston, 77, of Darien, Ga.; Isaiah Thomas, 79, of Jacksonville; Jacqueline Crews Carter, 75, of Jacksonville; Cynthia Gibbs, 74, of Jacksonville; William Johnson Jr., 73, of Atlanta; and Queen Welch, 76, Atlanta.

All elderly.
Imagine making it 93 years, and then die in this manner. Simply awful.

The emergency call came in after 3pm in the afternoon. Tide chart will tell us how deep the water was if local adjustments are needed.
Report mentioned 20 people in the water. .

I wonder how many besides those who died were also elderly, and how many actual able body younger adults were there to help. Might have had a lot of elderly trying to help elderly.

every time i see one of these it reminds me of the NOLA aquarium walk way that collapsed and dropped people into the shark tank.

This link from the Atlanta Journal Const. Show where high water is at that ferry landing, with the fallen gangplank.

Tide is super high in that pic, so that makes more sense. Incredibly tragic. God bless those souls.
