On August 10, 2018, a Horizon Air De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400 was stolen from Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (Sea–Tac) by 28-year-old Richard Russell, a Horizon Air ground service agent with no piloting experience. After Russell performed an unauthorized takeoff, two McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle fighters were scrambled to intercept the aircraft. Sea–Tac air traffic control made radio contact with Russell, the sole occupant, who described himself as a "broken guy, got a few screws loose, I guess." About 1 hour and 15 minutes after takeoff, Russell crashed the aircraft on lightly populated Ketron Island in Puget Sound, killing himself.

It's very poetic yet sad at the same time. I hope people struggling with thoughts of self harm can always get the help they need. I've lost too many friends from it.

Was there another guy that stole a plane and crashed it more recently?

Sad story all around. The podcast True Crime Kent did an episode on the guy. He read pretty much all of the radio communication between him and the tower/authorities. Absolutely worth the listen, he goes into the guy's background and everything.

He did it his way. Hate it and tragic, but no guns no drugs no nothing just his way.

I thought I remembered another thread on here but did not think it was 6 years ago but this could be the same one.

Just someone else's expensive airplane, along with all the cleanup crews involved afterwards.

There was a guy that stole a plane in Mississippi a year or so ago and landed in a field of cotton or corn I can’t remember. He survived

This is the one you're probably thinking of. He stole the plane, flew it around MS, crash landed, and survived. He got some Federal charges for it.

ABC

There was a long thread here that followed it when it happened.

If you listen to the ATC recordings, the intercept pilots sounded impressed af when he pulled off the backflip

I mean, it's sad that he reached a point in life that he felt like he needed to end it, but I gotta respect the way he did it. Didn't take anyone else with him and got to do a few barrel rolls while entertaining the entire internet.

Which makes it even sadder that a lot of what caused him to be depressed was that DEI shite was holding him back from being a pilot. Which he clearly had the talent to be a good one.

It’s a sad indirect commentary on society that so many men resonate with this story.

An average Joe living a mundane existence, but intelligent enough to realize he’s not special, never will be special, and just wants to feel something, anything exciting in a vast sea of hopelessness and just…grey drudgery.
