5 ton ac replacement price seems way too high - any one with experience in this?

Just got quoted $17,000 to replace my 5 ton (29 years old) ac to a carrier 16 seer 5 ton unit. They will also be replacing all ductwork, installing two new return air plenums, and a new branch to a bathroom. This is the second quote I have gotten in the same price range except the other guy was only going to clean the existing ductwork.
Am I getting hosed or is this just what these things cost these days? Any suggestions on Hvac guys would be appreciated also (I'm in Baton Rouge Jefferson and college dr area)

Seems kinda high but you are getting a completely new system with duct work.
I paid about that for new construction a few years back but it was for 2 - 3 ton units. 17 seer with the variable speed fan motors and hard duct.
A single unit should be cheaper. I would definitely shop around. You will get a wide range of bids.
What brand systems are your 2 bids from?

Trane and carrier. They both had the option of goodman but it was only around a $750 or so savings.

I was surprised at the disparity between some of the HVAC bids I got. It will be high if you are doing an entire new system.
I am guessing that price is probably for flex duct. Hard duct will be more but is better.
Check with Duvall heating and Air out of Denham Springs. He did my house and I found him from a reference of a coworker of mine. Small operation but the owner seemed to be a pretty good genuine fella and he always answered his phone or promptly called me back. He installed a Lennox system for me.

From the size of the unit I am going to assume its a large home. Sounds about right given the fact that they are replacing the duct work, plenums and making a new run to a bathroom. Get a few more quotes though. Just remember, you get what you pay for.

Granted this is sight unseen, that sounds extremely high, assuming flex duct can be run off new plen in the attic etc, I don't see being over $12-$13,000. Maybe seeing it would change that I just don't see it and we do a lot of retrofit/ upgrades etc. Happy to shoot you a bid on it if needed I live in the same area, happy to provide multiple references, even some from this board

17K? Way to high. Had my 4 ton unit inside and outside replaced that cost me 5K.

$17k is high as giraffe pussy! i'd get more price quotes. call air control engineering. they have HVAC'ed all of the houses i've built since '98. i'll personally vouch for them

I got a new Amana, Seer 14 I think. No new ductwork though. $6500.
According to a friend of mine in the ac business, you save approximately $100 per year per Seer rating.
Supposedly, it's about $1000 cost increase per Seer rating.... so about 10 years to recoop your investment per rating improvement.

My guy said the same thing. He discouraged me from going more than a 14 seer for this reason. The cost goes way up, and the ROI isn't there.

I had my new house done in 2013 for 16k. That's new construction however. I put in Ruud 14 seer heat pump units. We went with a 5 ton, 3 ton for upstairs,and 2 ton for the MIL apt.

Replaced my 4 ton system last year, no new duct work, for 5,600. I can't imagine the duct work costing over 2x the new system install. I used Tiger Air Conditioning.
