You’re focusing on mass shooting events, which are horrible but statistically insignificant.
Vast majority of criminals illegally acquire their guns and will continue to do so regardless of the laws.
Criminals in Mexico are very well armed despite strict gun control. Terrorists use AK-47s in countries with strict gun control.
Guns exist, and wishing they didn’t does no good.
So at best, the positive of restrictions on semi autos is you could make it more difficult for some mass shooters to acquire weapons. The negative is that every law-abiding citizens ability to protect themselves would be greatly diminished.

The tipping point is when the crime lords (who in truth will still have badass illegal guns) no longer allow the dipshit thugs to carry, since each gun that gets confiscated is another $10k hit to the bottom line.
As to home protection and hunting, single action revolvers and pump action shotguns would still be legal, along with bolt action rifles. All of those can get the job done. Lowering firearm lethality in this manner would certainly save lives.
