The "next number" in the pattern is 4. The solution to the blank in the pattern is 4.5, but the next number is 4.

Why are people still arguing this. The first clue doesn't even make any sense. It was written by an elementary school teacher, not a mathematician. It is a stupid problem.

I am a five digit number
The digit in the ten thousands place is the next number in the pattern: 36, 18, 9, _____.
• The factors of 36 are (3,3,2,2)
• The factors of 18 are (3,3,2)
• The factors of 9 are (3,3)
• Leaving the last number the factor (3)

The digit in the thousands place is 2 less than the greatest factor of 8
• The largest factors of 8 is (1,8))
• 8-2=6

Seven times the digit in the hundreds place is 49.
• X=the digit in the hundreds place
• 7x=49
• X=7
The digit in the tens place is the fourth multiple
of 2.
1. 1x2=2
2. 2x2=4
3. 2x3=6
4. 2x4=8

The digit in the one place is a prime number less than 3.

A prime number is a number greater than 1 that is only evenly divisable by 1 and itself.
Prime numbers (2,3,5,…)

What number am I? _3__ _6__ , _7__ __8_ _2__

Does this make sense to anyone?
Yes

The answer would be 76, 782

This I know is very anti climatic but has also been very educational... I feel a little better about my ability to sequence numbers... just a little! I will put more later if I get additional info from the teacher. Thanks everybody and have a great weekend!

Requoting and seeing if attempted answers will continue for several more pages anyway.

makes the answer to the question "that this is common core that we have to do to keep up with the rest of the world" look especially stupid

It's 4th grade - the pattern isn't going to be any more elaborate than add/subtract/multiply/divide and it has to be a whole number, so the question was obviously screwed up.

That was me. I hear parents all the time bitching ab common core. They are the ones who have kids who can't do the math. It's frustrating and it's different. But it's not "bad".
