At 3:00 am in the Pacific Ocean, trying to get out of a flaming boat...the only light you have is the fire. That's bad.

Crew was sleeping on the deck. Passengers were down below and I could easily see a panicked group clogging up the one escape route.
Sad because the passengers were all divers (so I assume they could all swim) and the boat was not that far offshore.

Fox is claiming the captain said the passenger compartment was locked.
They played a recording of the mayday call but very hard to understand.

Any opinions on what caused the fire?

Only caught part of it but there was talk of the cook generally firing up around the time the blaze started.
They also mentioned the scuba tanks on board may have played a part but that was speculation at this point.

Why would it be locked?

The first six seconds of this video shows a clip of how fast the insulation will burn off into smoke with a short circuit. If this ever happens on a boat and you are down below, the smoke will probably kill you before anything else.

Probably had a sea serpent swim on board. Any logical person would know to light the boat on fire

That is so sad.
On another note: it had 2 Detroit 2 stroke diesels? I bet that thing sounded incredible. Those engines are almost musical sounding.

Galley Outfitted with all appliances necessary for food preparation and is waterproof for divers in wetsuits. Onboard built-in Bar-B-Que.
Relatively small boat to be USCG certified to sleep 46 people they'd be packed like sardines in what was reported to be one large room below decks.
BBQ implies propane - how much was stored onboard?
Lots of scuba tanks that will pop with an external high temp heat source.
Could be the propane was the initial heat source and it cascaded from there while the divers were sleeping below decks.
RIP for these poor souls a terrible way to go.

Did everyone who jumped off the boat survive? I've always wondered if I could survive a boat disaster by jumping and swimming for shore. How far off the coast was the vessel?

I read that it sank 20 yards from the shore. But, I hope someone can double check that for me.
If those passengers would have been able to jump, since they were all presumably experienced divers, they all would have probably survived.

The crew were rescued by a nearby boat who saw flames I guess. That boats captain said they were in a dinghy.
Captain and 4 crew will be the only survivors. The coast guard and ntsb will crawl into their asses. Sounds like one horrendous event coupled with some monumental safety frick up/mistake. Like a locked passenger compartment.

This is a dive boat. The entrance to the bunkroom is next to the cooking area. That's where the explosion happened. There should have been a deck watch/crewman. The passengers below had no chance.
Here's a better link with more info.

Have they stated the cause of the fire yet? Kitchen fire? Cigarettes? Electrical?

NEW: Just spoke to Bob, captain of the Grape Escape, the boat that rescued the crew of the #Conception. Says he woke up at 330am to the crew pounding on his boat in their underwear after they went in the water. Captains clothes on his boat still. Never heard screams.
Sounds like they were just swimming
Crew member also had a gf perish in the fire so I doubt they abandoned the passengers.
Story is a nightmare come true

Nightmare is correct. Unimaginable.

My claustrophobia is giving me the willys right now. I can't imagine a worse way to go.
Hopefully they just perished in their sleep
