Thirty years ago, Don Calhoun got picked to try a three-quarter-court shot during a Bulls game. He made it, sending Michael Jordan and the Bulls into an all-out frenzy that he had won $1 million. Or so everybody thought.

....in the mid 90s.

May want to edit the thread title to reflect that as opposed to making it look like something that just happened.

There was an ESPN article about this whole story last year. Pretty interesting.

The $1 million dollar shot that changed sports contests forever

Good for MJ. There's nothing like participating in an event where the rules are made-up to favor the sponsor.

Though you’re right in your assessment that Allstate makes you fight them before paying, insurance companies who specialize in these sorts of things are the ones sort of behind the scenes and most have never heard of them.

Depends on the fan....if he were black, Lebron absolutely would have made sure he got paid. If he were white, not so much.

Insurance scam and frick people over? Shocking. Never would have guessed.

except that in the POLICY it specifically said it would not pay if shooter had played any form of College basketball....love when people blame Insurance companies when THEY did not read the docs. Same with the "new car" hole in one contest at every scramble- cannot have a pro hit the shot.

Can Insurance companies be pos, oh yes, see AIG circa 2008, but in this case ins company was right which is why it never went to court (pun intended).
