Honestly at that point you should really consider if you or your wife should stay home. Daycare cost alone probably run around $2000-$2500 a month and if you consider the additional saving from one parent staying home (gas, car ins, food, etc.) it probably equals around 30-40k a year. That's the take home from a 50-60k salary. So if either you or your wife alone makes less than 60k you might be better off staying home with the kids.

If one stays home, they no longer need a car insurance or food? I'm not understanding how that could save you money

they got off light then... seems like every private school here in nashville is over 20k a year... might catch a little break for siblings, but not much.

Looked at one the other day in Nashville that was $45k/year.

I've got a full time nanny for 2 and pay half that

What schools are you zoned for?

I'm in Grassland/Grassland/Franklin.

I can't imagine.

We've been really fortunate to find the home daycare we use. $450 a month. Two ladies in their 60s who have had this daycare just for teachers' children for the last 25 years.

I do not have kids but I would like to know. What really is the point in paying so much for day care? Is it the education? How much can they really learn that you couldn't teach them when you got home?

Jesuit doesn't cost nearly as much as most privates in other parts of the country.

A friend of mine from out of town was making fun of Nola people for paying all that money K-12 and then sending their kid to a state school like LSU. He said that in CT where he is from, you spend money on privates so your kid can get into a good school or an Ivy. Parents at Andover or Exeter etc would be pissed if Junior went to UConn

Honestly, a decent daycare nowadays can run you anywhere from $500 to $1,500 a month depending on where you live. It's more about quality of the center, teacher-to-child ratios in the rooms and things like that. We pay $800 a month in northwest Arkansas, which is higher than my brother pays in central Arkansas.

It's not a "keeping up withe Joneses" as much as it's "you get what you pay for." You can cut corners with costs on a lot of things, but child care and/or education isn't one of them, at least as far as I'm concerned.

Don't bother spending 30K for private school. Apparently, it is not worth the money.

I can't see education pre k being worth anything. I don't see why a kid needs to be ahead of a class. They are going to be in the same class as the others and bored. If you want to further educate them you still have to do it after school.

I could be blowing out my arse but then again I don't have a kid.

I couldn't be happier with my wife staying home with our kids. The house is clean, laundry done, and a home cooked meal every night when I arrive home.

The biggest part for me is my wife or I raising our kids, not some daycare worker. At least when they are infants at a minimum.

That is such an important time developmentally. Birth to 3rd grade is HUGE.

This is the reason people with kids move out of Baton Rouge.

WTH are you talking about?

Like I said, you don't cut corners with your child with care and/or education. From birth to around 3, you're just concerned with center quality, cleanliness and caretaker-to-child ratio. When they're 3 and up, you start concerning yourself with curriculum.

A good daycare is about $150 a week around here so let's say you spend $25k a year. Get them in public school and save all that afterwards. Paying private school prices is one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard.
