Yep. That was actually the first thing I noticed when mine came, but I didn’t realize it until later. When I was brushing my teeth and having my morning coffee things tasted off. And that morning my mouth felt just a little like I had been anesthetizedat the dentist. Not fully, but my lip and tongue just felt a little swollen. At first I figured I had done something while I was brushing my teeth.

Damn. I got lucky. Mine was pretty much gone in a couple weeks.

What sucks is that in a week I'm flying to Australia for two weeks. My friends are supposed to be taking me to incredible restaurants, breweries, and wineries. The seafood there is off the chain. Great craft beer and local wine. Damn.

Wow. I'm going through my 1st bout with it now on right side of my face. I'm 6 days in. On steroids and trying to protect my eye. I can't close my eye by itself at all and my taste buds are gone on that side. It's really embarrassing and sucks

I had jury duty during my first bout. It was embarrassing to me as well. To make thngs worse I actually got selected and had to speak in open court. Mine badly affected my speech as well.

One funny thing- here’s a special place in hell for whoever named it. When you have it, you can’t say Bs and Ps. Makes explaining what you have pretty frustrating.

What causes this? Is it debilitating? How can you work if it last 6 months?

Age doesn’t matter. I knew a 19 year old that had it.

It is thought that a strain of chicken pox or zoster virus causes it if I recall correctly. It is debilitating but not disabling unless you work in a profession like broadcasting or something where you are communicating publicly. It only affects the muscles in your face. It paralyzes them in a slack state. You can’t smile, raise your eyebrows, wink, etc. In my case eating was also an adventure. Tried to do that alone as much as possible.

It's not really known. Stress can be a factor. Some research says that the herpes virus can cause it.

Not really. Bad cases can affect speech or sleep (because you can't close the affected eye), but not drastically.

Well, I am a contractor in the construction field, so I work mostly with my hands. I'm not staring at a monitor all day. I'm sure that would be a factor.

Yes. The viruses that are thought to cause it are very common. Some of us just get lucky enough that they are activated at some point in our lives to cause Bells Palsy as well as chicken pox or cold sores.

I had it develop about 15 months ago. I have significant improvement but still have lasting effects. At least I can close both eyes now and drink out of a straw. It sucked taking showers and getting water and shampoo in my eye.

Seriously though, hope you get through that.

Hope it's not lifetime issues or months.
