The face/head is based off african masks and the sculpture is a response to other sculptures in the plaza including this one of zeus which is a hyperbolic representation.

I thought it looked bad when I first saw it but the more I look at it and just think about it as a piece of art the more I like it. It does remind me of african art I've seen which is more caricature in nature.

quote:

he drew inspiration from the ancient Greek Temple of Zeus and African religious art, especially that of the Luba and Maasai cultures.

And then there is this....which seems like trying too hard IMO.
quote:

In the coming weeks, reports Artnet News, visitors will be able to activate a QR code near the sculpture and literally ask the “oracle” figure a question. They may then receive an answer from one of several unnamed celebrities, who will take turns answering queries with “mysterious, poetic vagaries,” Biggers adds.

If I drew a caricature of an “African” like that they’d have me up a pole.

But this stands in NYC.

Gonna cancel the Crows in Dumbo but have this monstrosity out in public

That is the African Renaissance Monument in Dakar, Senegal in AFRICA. This is how Africans see themselves.

The 25 foot statue honoring African culture in NYC is a statue of how lily white liberals see Africans.

Here’s one.

“There once was a statue from Biggers,
Like a waterhead Don Cheadle figure,
But if made by a cracker,
About people much blacker...”

That’s where it ends.

Mysterious, poetic and vague.
