No shite. I just took ten seconds and scrolled up in the calendar on my phone to verify that was a Saturday. Good Lord.

On Saturday, February 1, 2003, Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated as it re-entered the atmosphere over Texas and Louisiana, killing all seven astronauts on board. It was the second Space Shuttle mission to end in disaster, after the loss of Challenger and crew in 1986.

These events are etched into our memories, for whatever reason. They occurred so close together on the calendar.

Meteorologist Rob Perillo recorded video of the debris in the sky, and was all over various national news outlets that day.

All 3 apollo 17 showed up to my grandpa's funeral. Probably should've been the 13 crew, considering the 3rd stage really saved their asses

Seen a lot of people talk about Challenger and Columbia, suggesting it was administrative negligence at NASA that doomed both crews. Apparently they filmed the launch and knew the wing was damaged. Some people say they could have spun up another shuttle and got it up there and transferred the crew to bring them home but instead NASA decided to roll the dice and pretend nothing happened on the launch. I don't know if that's accurate or not.

As it appears on a calendar.

Challenger - January 28
Columbia - February 1.

Within a week of each other by day, so many people have memories of each occurring around the same time every year.

I was a very small child for Challenger so I don’t have as vivid of memories as some others. I was in the space program for Columbia so my memories are more prominent and at the forefront of, and have specific meaning to me.

Woke up to several sonic booms, asked the wife if they were firing at Ft. Polk, she worked out there at that time. It was debris from the aircraft. Buddy of mine found some out in the woods scouting for turkeys.

They didn't happen the same way. Everyone watched Challenger explode on TV. No one watched Columbia break up on TV. The only way anyone saw it is if they were under the re-entry path. CNN was doing re-entry coverage but it didn't become a story until the arrival time passed. It's not really possible to confuse them other than the names starting with a C. But then one happened in 86 and the other in 03.

They drained an area lake one year after the mishap. Was walking around the area that would be underwater and found some type of stainless-steel object that didn't look like anything that should be there. Forgot about the shuttle, probably a piece of the shuttle.

I'm old enough to remember both the Challenger and Columbia accidents.

The Challenger coverage was much more intense and visceral, it happened in plain site and everyone knew what happened.

The Columbia coverage was far more murky, the early coverage couldn't quite figure out if it was just lost or off course or damaged or destroyed. Took awhile for them to basically definitively say it was destroyed.

was getting ready to go to daughters tennis tourney in wichita falls. lived in ennis texas. boom was very loud and the windows in the house rattled. was on the front porch watching the debris go across the sky. i called my relatives north of beaumont and told them to be on the lookout for stuff falling out of the sky.

I heard a sonic boom in Leesville = thought it was strange even tho Ft Polk was nearby, they had never had supersonic flights anywhere that I'd heard of.

As far as I know, the object that caused that sonic boom was never found - would have been between Leesville and DeRidder.

Very sad day.
