22 Years Ago Today - Space Shuttle Columbia Accident

STS-107 broke-up over TX during reentry killing the crew of seven astronauts.
I remember waking up on a Saturday morning much like today, shortly thereafter seeing the breakup footage. It was a sad time.

There are still parts of it at the bottom of Toledo Bend

The black dude was from Tampa and briefly talked to the broadcast crew during the Super Bowl.

Believe it or not…..Trumps fault

That is the only reason I stopped trying to become an astronaut.

Except for the fact it happened on a Monday.

Thought it was a Sunday?

A Saturday morning like today. I had a basketball game that morning and heard about it in the parking lot after the game. I was fascinated by space as a kid so I watched the news all day and into the night. I remember thinking Rick Husband was a pretty cool dude. Debris was found all over Texas and Louisiana. This is the pretty infamous radar return.

It was a Monday.
I remember the teacher wheeled in the tube TV & we watched it in elementary school.

I always thought it was awesome how the shuttle would re-enter over Louisiana. It was cool to have that connection to the space shuttle program. It was low enough to be pretty distinct glowing orange and flying across the sky. Then the sonic boom would rattle the house. They change the re-entry path to over the Gulf as a direct result of Columbia.

You’re probably thinking of Challenger (Jan 28, 1986), and that was a Tuesday

You either have a bad memory of your teacher recorded the event and replayed it for your class. It was a Saturday

I 100% am. I saw the curly headed lady and assumed it was teacher.

Leroy Cain is a class act. I can’t imagine being in his shoes or anyone else in the room. They were practically like family with astronauts.
