What have you seen from large tech corporations and the American government that makes you think their will be abundance?

You act like we don't have a gazillion pages of regulations already.

It’s funny when supposed conservatives choose to trust our tech lords. Just need to throw out a good foreign boogeyman for the masses and you’ll have people like OP talking about are freedoms.

For many of them I don’t think it even takes the foreign boogeyman. They got their signal from dear leader so without any thought know what position to have and will defend it to their dying breath

Nonsense. People can have whatever opinions they want about Covid, but the dangers of AI are real.

If you don’t see the potential danger, then the truth is that you really don’t know anything about AI. You haven’t done any research at all. Because if you did, you would feel much more uneasy about it.

It’s advancing so fast that humans are unable to adequately put safeguards in place.

It's a zero sum game. Either American AI wins and we get to a future of abundance or Chinese AI wins and we are stuck in a dystopian future. Our only choice is to keep China way behind us.

The goal for everyone is literally to create a self thinking, self perpetuating, autonomous AGI. Without guardrails and, perhaps, human ethics and consciousness, this AGI may simply destroy humanity. Go watch Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning if you want to see ways in which this could manifest.

Even with those guardrails, an AGI entity could simply ignore them, go around them, or adjust in a way that negates the guardrails.

Who makes it is, at that point, inconsequential.

We need to be asking bigger questions:

Why are we doing this?
Who does this benefit?
What benefits are gained?
Is it worth these benefits to risk what could happen?

Then we can ask:

How do we keep this from becoming a runaway AGI?
How do we keep this in the hands of responsible users?
What is a responsible user?
If this is a global phenomenon, should we instead work together with China and other countries to create an AI that benefits the world rather than one country?
Is it possible for an AGI to serve a country or is it naturally going to go toward its own selfish ends (understanding that AGI in some contexts is not autonomous)?

Once AI breaks down the privacy and anonymity of the internet people are going to think about this a little different. Especially some people here.

America loses its advantages over China if AI allows authoritarians to rule us. We cannot allow a superior intelligence to come into being and be able to determine its own desires. If we do, we won’t be ruled by Americans or Chinese; we will be ruled by machines…and probably eliminated.

No, but you should totally trust the "experts". But only the ones your favorite news stations tell you are reliable. Trust them too!
