only $3 million of the $1.6 BILLION that is available from the feds has been spent/distributed

I don't understand calling this a "1000 year flood," when Denham seems to severely flood about every 30 years.

The douche lords of Livingston and Ascension parish removed the no wake area for our neighborhood at the start of the boating season saying "it was no longer needed". So now the houses who were in bad shape are in far worse shape due to the much much faster erosion caused by hundreds of boats flying by 15 yards off the bank.

My house on Hoo Shoo Too was 2" from flooding. Kinda wonder if the "dam" helped slow the water enough so I didn't flood.

People said that the 1983 flood was a once in a generation flood, one that we'll likely never see again. Then 33 years later in March 2016 some areas saw a flood that was within reach of 1983. People said "whew, that was close". Then a few months later in August we saw a flood that blew 1983 out of the water.
These are becoming more and more common due to the massive development in SELA. Weather is remaining the same, development is occurring left and right -- it's not a global warming thing, it's a development thing. We need to get used to this because one day, at some point in the next 30 years, we'll probably see another one close to or exceeding 2016.

I agree with everything you said.

Anybody with half a brain knows the flood was caused by GW

Didn't flood.
Was a count hair away from flooding.

Moving to Zachary.
I am not that far behind. My house didn't flood and had 8"-12" before flooding but the idiots out here want to concrete every inch they can. Central will become flood city soon just during regular rainfall. Council actually believes that raising land for new development has zero net affect on neighboring property owners because a report says so.

Couldn't agree with you more.
Those of us with a whole brain know it wasn't.

The closest comparison we have to March 2016 was 1983. The March 2016 flood was much worse than 1983.

More effort needs to be made to mitigate and control flooding in the area. The measures taken in 1983 to prevent future flooding were still not in place by 2016. Pathetic.

In Central.
Flooded with 3-6 inches
had structure but not contents (had forms filled out to cancel insurance on the kitchen table had not been mailed)
Was displaced for approx 9 mths. (from The day after August 13th to May 2017
--NFIP was actually not too bad on their damage assesment and offered a decent amount for repairs
--Spent at least a week arguing with mtg company on them accepting a repair contract by a reputable local home builder before we finally got our money from NFIP.
--Contractor did decent work, didnt have any of the horror stories that I read about on here or other places.
Overall very happy to be in our newly renovated home (we were fortunate to be able to make some upgrades while renovating..cabinent/sink/countertops. New bathroom tubs/walk in showers
We do have an SBA loan now because we had to replace furniture that was ruined, but we could be in a MUCH MUCH worse situation.

1953 flood- government assessment
1983 flood-Advocate article
I wonder if there are any posters here who can tell us about the flood of '53?

I think thats a misconception delivered by the media and people misspeaking. It was actually the rainfall that was a 1000 year event in watson, denham, and central. It was measured as such. It's literally the only thing that could be measured with no other considerations. Flooding involves too many variables (residential and commercial development, river conditions at the time of rainfall, ground conditions, etc) to call it that.

While I'm not disagreeing on development affecting drainage we had 30+" of rain in a little over 24 hours which is unheard of and downright ridiculous. By comparison the '83 flood recorded about half that. Concrete or no concrete the river would have still surpassed the old record and would have probably been within a foot of where it actually crested.

I couldn't agree more. People complaining that this wasn't done or that was developed irritate me. Yes, development plays a huge role in flooding, BUT when you get 30"+ of rain in 72 hours like some parts of the BR area did last year, places that have never flooded in anyone's lifetimes will flood. Period. Development plays a role, but no area can sustain that much rainfall in such a short period of time.
