My buddy bought I think a 2011 or 2012, pretty sure it was a 2011, Jetta TDI that had like 15k on it like yours and he loves it. Drives all over the place and already has 50k on it. Gets anywhere from 43-48 mpg. You can chip it if you want it to go faster but the beauty of a diesel engine is the torque so youll at least have fun accelerating from red lights. I drove it and really liked it. It's a tad small and I am still hoping to cling to my truck but I've recommended the Jetta TDI to all of my friends.

I'd say jump on it.

I have one. About 8000 miles on it so far. I have a Pilot and a CRV so was looking for something smaller, cheap and fun to drive for a third car. The TDI is a kick to drive. Great torque and acceleration. It's a little cheap on the inside but I am leasing it so don't care how it will look in 8 years. For next car I may get an Audi TDI.

One thing I'm always very suspicious of, no matter what make of car, is why the pervious owner got rid of it after only one year.

Sometimes its a change in life situation, but always look over the car very carefully.
If somebody's gonna fix a wrecked car, it will generally be a newer model with lower miles.
Also, be aware that it could be a lemon-law buyback.

Run that VIN.

Acquire Jetta TDI

Install 2.5" straight pipe
Roll coal in your small German sedan

If you go with a 13, you should be good.

VW heard the screams and complaints from its loyalists (including me) about cheap arse interiors and torsion bars. The did it initially to be cost competitive with the Japanese but cheapened the vehicle horribly.

The 2013 has better interior quality, better seats and independant rear suspension.

Buddy of mine has a 2012 and I hate everything about his TDI. Flat seats, cheap cabin, rear end floating around. Its saving grace was the MPG it got.

Even though my MkIV may be an "unreliable shite box" to some folks (I've had it for 15 years and it's been "pretty reliable" thus far for a German Car), the 2013 made a ton of improvements.

My wife has a 2012. Average right under 40 mpg (like 39.3 or something). No issues at all at right over 30k miles. I read about some high pressure fuel pump issues that destroyed the fuel system right after we bought. Gave me heartburn for a while, but I talked to the service department at the dealership and they explained how that was resolved in the models after 2010. I don't even think about it anymore.

Only complaint is that the first maintainence after the initial warranty is up is supposed to be about $600. But that's a major service. With the money we saved in fuel and not having to pay a dime for even a tire rotation during the first 36k miles, it's not a big deal.

Overall, you're not getting a German luxury car. It's a nice middle of the road car that gets great fuel economy. I think we paid right under 24k for it brand new. I now want all diesel vehicles.

Do you have a MT or DSG? I'm guessing MT because the dealer told me 40k service would be about $1,000. I took it to a local shop (with good reviews from TDIClub) and he did it for $700. If you have a DSG, I'm curious to know where you're getting 40k service for $600.

ETA: For clarification, I have a DSG. I was asking if his was DSG or MT because I was surprised to see a price tag of only $600 for a 40k service.

I own a 2007 VW Jetta with a 2.5 L gas engine. I have had hardly any issues with it, besides the shitty stock Firestone tires, and I have 133K mile on it now. Thing still runs like a champ and gets mid to high 30's on the highway for mileage. When time comes, the next vehicle I want is the Diesel Passat. The worst park of a VW is they are over-engineered in a sense, but I would recommend a VW to anyone. Never had any major issues with mine, which I see some OTers swear by.

Wife has a 2012 Sportwagen TDI. She loves it. Great mileage, plenty of room in the "trunk." If she's happy, I'm happy.

Have a 2010 jetta sportwagen tdi for my shop. Has about 46k on it. Runs great I get about 45mpg.

I also have a 2013 vw CC executive AWD 300hp. Thing is a bullet and the fit and finish is great. I absolutely love driving it.
Had a 2011 touareg before it and a 2007 passat before that.
Never had any issues with any of them. Just did the 10k service intervals. I would recommend VW to anyone.

Couldn't agree more. Wanna say the previous owner didn't like how small it was and traded it in for a Passat. Luckily for my friend it hasn't had any problems and he drives the shite out of it. He probably drives more than anyone I know too.

We just did the 30k service at Ray Brandt. He told me the next one would be about $600ish. We have the DSG. That may have been for just the transmition. I could have misunderstood.

For service, I've been to Walker in Metairie and Ray Brandt. Ray Brandt was soooooo much faster and I've never needed an appointment. Walker required an appointment and I had to wait a few weeks to bring it in. I've heard horror stories of the dealership's service departments in the area. Been happy with Ray Brandt so far.

We have the 2013 TDI Passat and average 39-41 MPG. Love the car, family trip to Panama City and only used half a tank. Can't beat that.

At the prices I've been given, it sounds like it might be "before transmission service" but then again, maybe I'm just getting ripped off or maybe Houston is that much more expensive.

Got it done today, 5K under book for 17K (talked them down after I found a dent on rocker panel section - Curb maybe?). Thought I did well. Anyway, here are the pics. Nothing OT fab, but it'll get the job done.

Drove it home from Nashville to Huntsville - roughly 120 miles, burned slighly over 2 gallons.

It's odd seeing a 700 mile range on a 14 gallon tank.
