I like the looks of the cayenne better, but I would imagine the maintenance on the lexus would be much better down the road if you plan to keep it past the warranty period.

I would go lexus because everyone that I see driving a cayenne is a douche. Edit: just realized who the OP is, get the Cayenne.

The 460 had serious rollover issues early on. While they countered this to an acceptable level, the Cayenne is a much more stable platform.

Safety starts at AVOIDING the collision.

As a fan of both Porsche automobiles (real ones, meaning with 2 doors) and Toyota/Lexus - I'm coming down on the GX460 side, myself.

Just on reliability and capability alone. The Cayenne isn't a bad vehicle, but Toyota underpinnings beat Volkswagen underpinnings.

Plus - the GX460 is a luxury version of the 4Runner - that's practically a combat vehicle.

As a long time Porsche fan and owner, if the porsche isn't a turbo then I would buy a Volvo XC90. It's a better car

Just got rid on an XC90. It was the biggest piece of crap I've ever owned. Had to have it towed around 3 times in the first 2 or 3 years. The worst was when it broke down the night before we were headed to Orlando for vacation. They wouldn't let us take a loaner out of state, and it was Mardi Gras week so we couldn't find a rental car anywhere around here. Had to borrow my Mom's too-small vehicle for the trip.
Go with the Porsche. Their service department will treat you like royalty whether you bought a car new or used, no matter where you purchased it.

This is the absolute truth.

If I'm deciding between two equally priced, equally worn, equally luxurious SUVs, I'm going to buy the one that's the most capable. That's the Lexus.

You can tow a reasonable amount with the Lexus (6,500 pounds I believe) and it has real, lockable 4x4 instead of useless AWD.

What if the apocalypse comes and you need to do some offroading to escape a horde of looters or natural disaster? You're going to be sorry you bought the Porsche in that scenario.

Also, what if you need to go to work but your Porsche now has 75,000 miles, which is a TON for a Porsche, and is broken and you can't make it there? You're going to be sorry you bought the Porsche in that scenario.

The trick to owning a Porsche is having a good independent mechanic that you trust. A good friend of mine specializes in Porsches and charges a fraction of what it would cost at the dealership. That said, taking it to the dealership for warranty work is great (they treat you better than any other dealer in my experience). Having owned more than one Porsche, I can tell you that the cost of running one isn't as bad as it's made out to be as long as you do your homework and have a good indie mechanic (tracking one is a whole different story).

The Cayenne is a surprisingly capable off-road vehicle. Unfortunately, most people would never know this because they are primarily used to take the kids to soccer practice. It's also capable of towing a fair amount depending on the model. There are many people at track days I go to that use a Cayenne to tow their race cars.

I have to disagree on the reliability comment. I can't speak for the Cayenne, but Porsche's sports cars are very reliable in my experience. I have over 60k miles on my Cayman and have never had any major issues with it (it's also tracked 3-7 times a year). I recently added a Carrera S to the garage and it's done everything I've asked of it and more so far. It doesn't have many miles on it yet, but I have friends who own them and have spent enough time in and around them to know that they hold up very well (the 996 has some issues, but that's a conversation for another time).

Do you live next to an active volcano? Why the frick would you use natural disaster/apocalypse readiness as a criteria for buying a vehicle?

It's actually closer to a Land Cruiser Prado, the overseas-only baby LC, than anything else.

I'm sure this is really an issue.

Which carries more groceries from Whole Foods? That is a more realistic question.

The lexus will be my wife's next 4x4.

Unbeknownst to her, I already have tons of parts stashed away in the shop.

Fj cruiser spring perches to ditch the airbags.
Arb and Bilstein shocks
Sliders
Lightweight nissan wheels
A few steering components
And a winch bumper and tire carrier

When she gets it later this year when people start getting desperate for money, she details it while I mod it.

The thing will have trail scars after a week.

They are awesome. The transmission alone is awesome.

As for 8k for the touch screen going out, get the 470 instead with the mark levinson system and do a tablet install, it's a little taller, but I prefer the older body style for that.

For the better interior and exterior I'd definitely choose the Porsche.

But it really depends on how long you plan to keep the vehicle because you can't beat a Lexus' reliability to 200,000 miles. Porsche isn't terrible (better than Audi, BMW & Mercedes) but they're not Toyota-esque in longevity and parts prices either.
