Two Cyclists Touring the World on Bikes Were Murdered in Mexico
quote:
The BBC reports that Holger Hagenbusch, a 43-year-old from Germany, and Krzysztof Chmielewski, a 37-year-old from Poland, had separately visited dozens of countries via bicycle before their paths crossed in Chiapas, a state in southern Mexico. Their bodies were found at the bottom of a ravine just off a major road between the towns of Ocosingo and San Cristóbal de las Casas.
The pair disappeared in late April. Chmielewski’s body was found first, on April 26, beside a bicycle that police later determined to belong to Hagenbusch. Chmielewski appeared to have been partially dismembered and was missing a foot, according to reports. Hagenbusch’s body was found on May 4 a short distance away in the same ravine.

Need to send some pedal cab drivers to that part of Mexico.

So they put the 2nd guy's body next to the 1st guy's bike in order to make it look like an accident - but they had cut off his foot? And the 1st guy was decapitated? Do you gain status in the cartel if you show up to a gathering with a severed head or foot? WTF

When I saw “murdered in Mexico”, I figured Chiapas would be high up on the list.
That’s one of their poorest states and perpetually in rebellion. Lots of indigenous tribes and illegal immigrants from Guatemala and El Salvador. Sort of New Mexico minus the blue meth.

i'm surprised they didn't take the bikes. they had to have been worth a couple hundred at least even in the backwoods of mexico.
maybe they were just pissed off at a couple of hippy-looking smug europeans riding through their poverty struck regions like its a theme park.

They thought someone had requested the head of Alfredo Garcia and were hoping to collect the reward.

They made it about 100 miles before they were murdered... frickin' Mexico.
Reminds me of a real life version of the "feel good story" about the hitchhiking robot that made it to Philly before getting murdered in the hood

So I suppose they assumed Mexico was good to go then.

I ran into a guy doing the same thing but he started in Maine and was heading to Argentina. He would ride 60 miles a day and stopped at the fire department in Gueydan. I moved our fire truck out of the bay and he set up shop there for the night. I cooked him a meal and we shared a cigarette. I really hope he didn't die like this!
