I was nine as well. We took a summer trip in a paneled 1972 station wagon and drove from Louisiana to Orlando in that thing. No seatbelts whatsoever. There was a jump seat in the back where we road and we just sat there playing board games for the whole trip. I remember Disney World was still out in the middle of nowhere at that time. We drove through acres and acres of orange groves before we got there.

My ole man purchased a lawn mower back in 1976 and it had red white and blue stars and stripes all over it. I felt like a proud American for years to come every time he made me do the lawn.

I was 14 years old then, and the main things that I remember, all of The U.S cars, had a Bicentennial Edition, that were all white, with red and blue trim. You rarely see any of these cars anymore. I did see a Spirit of America 76 Chevy Nova a few weeks ago that was really nice.

Also Bicentennial coins,mainly quarters.

There were lots of really big 4th of July celebrations that year.

I was 15. Remember "The Bicentennial Minute" that year during commercial breaks on TV?

This summer when you're being inundated with all this American bicentennial Fourth of July brouhaha, don't forget you're celebrating the fact that a bunch of slave owning, aristocratic, white males didn't want to pay their taxes.

Guess you've never heard of "no taxation without representation"?

Or maybe my sarcasm meter needs recalibrating.

1976 was the year I graduated from HS. The Bicentennial was The. Most. Hyped. Event. in American history, even more than most Super Bowls.

Everywhere you looked, there were signs of the Bicentennial. Even if you lived under a rock, you knew the Bicentennial was coming.

Neither. It's a line from a pretty famous movie set in the summer of 76. As far as I know, there isn't any bicentennial brouhaha this year.

Yes, it was very hyped.

Dob y'all remember all the fire hydrants painted as flags or revolutionary soldiers?

My brother tried to corner the market in bicentennial quarters. My parents probably still have a sack of them in their safe.

They year 2000 seemed as far away as 2040 does now. Because it was.
