Who here (old farts like me) remembers the National 55 mph speed limit law?
That sucked big time. Now granted, I just read where the National fatality rate from auto accidents dropped nearly 5%.
I think the Supreme Court ruled that the federal government could not determine the speed limits because they are governed by each state.

I remember.

But I will say that distracted driving is far worse than speed limits.

Remember it well. Was horrible and not only that, the musclecar era ended and you got crap like the Mustang II. Was a great decade before 1974 though.

Know how many tickets I got back in those days…

55 was a terrible speed limit. Felt like you were creeping along…

If it was not for all the in car distractions. A focused driver doing 100 mph is much safer than the typical driver doing 65.

only if everyone else is doing 100.
speed limits are fine now at 70-75 as long as you get the implied 5+mph cushion. Driving is inherently dangerous and there’s really not more that can be done about it as long as there’s a human behind the wheel

But then the federal government tied speed limit too Federal Highway funding Louisiana was the last state to get on board because of all the money they made getting kids drunk on Mardi Gras and LSU game day

I thought this had to do with La raising the legal drinking age to 21, not speed limits. But I am old so could be misremembering. Lol.

Leaving the car running while filling up with gas is another good one.

One day cars will be practically impossible to crash, even with human’s behind the wheel.

I remember when the feds let the speed limits go up to 65 in non-urban areas. Unfortunately it was a bit too late since my 1st of 2 speeding tickets was 76 in a 55 (which is now 70.) Also all of the peak MADD and "Just say No" was coming into the picture. There was a TON of heat when they upped the drinking age from 19 to 21 (after the feds threatened their highway funds.) It wasn't grandfathered so if you were 20 and sitting at a bar with your woman, at midnight you were illegally drinking if you hadn't finished your beer. If that's not bad enough, I know of at least 1 person in our county who was under the legal limit but because he was 20 they nailed him for being over .06 or .08 (.10 was the line back then.)
