Italians are essentially North African decedents mixed with southern Europeans.

Phillips County Arkansas, LaForche Parish Louisiana, and Leflore County Mississippi are the top 3 counties with most lynchings in American history.

Phillips County Arkansas lynched 5 times more than LaForche Parish and Leflore County. 245 lynchings in one county is insane.

Unpossible! Only black people have ever been lynched.

Netflix will make a movie about this and make all the Italians gay blacks.

There was actually a movie called "Vendetta" made about this incident.

Just curious, have us Italians ever brought this up and demanded reparations? Are we tearing down statues in NOLA?

Hennessy was dirty. He had business dealings with lots of shady people back then, not just the mafia. As the old stories go, the mafia was the one bunch he did not try to screw over because of their presence on the Riverfront. They were profitable and had something of a monopoly on the supply of longshoremen. Matrana, et al were all about keeping it status quo.

There was a belief that a pimp shot Hennessey over a shakedown. Who knows. But the legend is, that most of the people lynched were not even part of the Black Hand.

Funny thing, Hennessey's great granddaughter married the son of Sicilian immigrants .

Provenzanos are good people. The family is completely legit with kids that are Doctors and Engineers and I think one was a judge. Went to HS with 2 of them still talk to one of them.

They did receive reparations for this

quote:

When President Harrison agreed to pay a $25,000 indemnity to the victims' families, Congress tried unsuccessfully to intervene against the reparations, accusing him of "unconstitutional executive usurpation of Congressional powers".[85] The United States paid $2,211.90 to each family of the eleven victims.

apparently, this sparked Columbus day as well

quote:

The incident strained relations between the United States and Italy. The Italian consul Pasquale Corte left New Orleans in late May 1891 and the New York Times published his statement accusing the city politicians of responsibility for the lynchings.[7] The Italian government demanded that the lynch mob be brought to justice and that reparations be paid to the dead men's families. When the U.S. declined to prosecute the mob leaders, Italy recalled its ambassador from Washington in protest.[83] The U.S. followed suit, recalling its legation from Rome. Diplomatic relations remained at an impasse for over a year, and there were rumors of a declaration of war on America as a result of the murders. As part of a wider effort to ease tensions with Italy and placate Italian Americans, President Benjamin Harrison declared the first nationwide celebration of Columbus Day in 1892, commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Italian explorer's landing in the New World

so yeah, the wops were just as whinny about this lynching as everyone else that has been lynched.

That’s pretty cool.

Imagine having that as your family’s past.

Wrong, Hollywood and internet myth. Even Sicilians like Portuguese and Spanish have negligible North African admixture.

Italians have genetic continuity since pre Roman times with Greek being the only major contributer.
