A table of 8 Italians from Long Island, they'll tip well and above gratuity, so I would always exclude it. A table of 8 black people, never take off gratuity because of the tipping stereotypes. It exists for a reason.

It was a party 20 people. That many people means it usually takes at least two people assigned to just that party in order to provide sufficient service. Those two people waiting that table aren't waiting on any other tables (thus cutting their potential tips dramatically, because large parties like that tend to stay longer).
The group has no out in this other than if the restaurant didn't tell them beforehand of a mandatory gratuity for large groups. Even then, the group members who left still earn the Dumbass & Assholery merit badges for thinking they deserve to take a frickton more resources yet not have to pay extra.
