Let's also not forget that harsher sentences pretty much never serve as a real deterrent for the crimes they're targeting. If that were the case, no one would ever get murdered.

Not my point but still technically true. It is a factor in the discussion & to pretend otherwise is simply ignorance.
Now it might be a small factor, it might be necessary, it might even be the correct choice to make at the present time, but it is still true. Harsher sentencing guidelines make it harder for people to get plea deals, drug court, and so on.
It is a large issue with many factors but you seem content to boil it down to "don't start nothing, won't be nothing"

Tell me, how does a failure doing drugs impact you? Why should we spend billions putting these people in jails for years on end for these crimes?
