are any of yall that are planning on having kids waiting because of this? from what I understand, and I may be way off, the virus isnt contracted in the US but from travel abroad. If my wife and I havent been out of the country, we dont have anything to worry about huh?
I have one kid already, 9 months, and we are thinking about trying for another.

What's pretty scary is that the type of mosquito that is commonly present in the South and Southeast....is the same type of mosquito that spreads Zika.
If I lived in the southern part of the U.S. I would be bathing in DEET everyday.

Can be contracted sexually too. So men can get it, not know they have it, and give it to women.
But yes, you are right, there are very few cases of people getting bit by mosquitoes in the US and getting it. Mostly from travel abroad and/or sexually transmitted.
However, the CDC is projecting that the carrying mosquitoes will infiltrate the US soon on a very large scale in the warmer months. There projection models are pretty fricking scary tbh.

Mid October. If I remember right, you're expecting in September, right? Congrats
Also, I found out yesterday I passed the PE.

Honestly, it's always in the back of my mind. But from everything I've seen researching coupled with what our OB tells us, there isn't too much to worry about as long as you don't travel to areas where the virus is originating. At least, not at the current time. As the mosquitoes start coming out, I'll take more caution just to be on the safe side though. But I'm not going to stress over it until our OB says we need to.

That's the range of the mosquitos that carry Zika

World health authorities expect the outbreak to eventually reach every place in the Americas where the Aedes aegypti mosquito has previously spread the dengue virus. That includes everywhere from South Florida and the Gulf Coast to northern Argentina and Chile. Hawaii will be affected as well; some Pacific Islands are now having outbreaks.

Yep and as well all know in South Louisiana, mosquito season is just starting.
All the standing water and warm weather make a perfect breeding ground.

There shouldnt be worry. The birth defects seem to only come about if the woman is infected in the first trimester. Even then, it isnt a guarantee. I hate to tell yall, but a cold, the flu, a fever, chickenpox, etc etc can all be detrimental during the first trimester.
I am not saying go party in brazil while pregnant, but true worry should not be part of the pregnancy. Try and enjoy it

I'm supposed to visit LA for my 20th HS reunion in September.
So I'll be keeping a close watch(esp if I do get pregnant by then). Depending on what happens this summer...I may reconsider my trip.

Like I said, I'm not worrying until I'm told be an expert I should.
I see nurse is taking the opposite approach in this thread and already has someone worried

Give me a break. You're severely overreacting right now.

Wife is 5.5 months pregnant. Last ultrasound was fine, but still scares the shite out of me.

I think Inovio is actually in the lead currently. They have a working version of a vaccine that has proven effective in mice. They are looking at moving into phase I trials very soon. A couple of big pharma operations (AZ and GSK) have mentioned a possible interest in vaccine development, but have not actually joined the race. In all likelihood, they will let one of these biotechs do most of the legwork then either buy them or the manufacturing rights through a licensing agreement.

Yeah, we elected not to go on a trip to the Caribbean/Mexico, but only because we know these locations don't adequately treat for mosquitoes.

this is absurd
I'll worry about Zika as much as I worry about West Nile...which none of us worry about

I’m no chicken little about shite like this, but this stuff is really bad. It’s not like getting the flu during the first trimester gives your baby a major chance of developing microcephaly. There have been thousands of babies (maybe TENS of thousands) born with this due to mosquito transmission in South America. And our first mosquito season with Zika being a prominent factor is upon us. I’ve spoken with physicians about it and they believe it to be a very serious public safety issue.
It’s not something to take lightly AT ALL.
The good news is that they firmly believe a vaccine will be around in the next couple of years at most.
ETA:
And it basically does nothing to males or anyone not trying to get pregnant or carrying in their 1st trimester. I'm not worried about it all
