I'll worry about Zika as much as I worry about West Nile...which none of us worry about

Zika isn't a big deal if you're not trying to get pregnant or a woman carrying in her first trimester (or early 2nd in rare cases).

Its just that small demo that needs to be careful and use bug spray and wear long sleeves if they can. There are simple precautions you can take if you fit that demo that dramatically reduce the chances of you getting Zika.

How so?

Again...the same mosquitos that carry Zika in Brazil, etc....are present in certain parts of the U.S. Not saying those mosquitos in the U.S. HAVE Zika...but it is the same breed of mosquito that has been shown to carry Zika.

Seems like common sense to watch the situation and see what happens. I mean...look how it's progressed so far. At first it was just Brazil...now look how many countries they are saying is affected (even Hawaii now).

In this country, you don't HAVE to do anything with the situation as it is currently. The only thing you NEED to do is avoid travelling to those southern countries.

That may change, but it's true now.

Well, until they are shown to be carrying here, there's no need to be a fear-mongerer.

You're doing more than that. You sound like an outbreak in this country is right around the corner. It's not.

I disagree, as does the CDC.

There are easy precautions to take if you're in the gulf coast to prevent most mosquito bites. If you're trying to get pregnant or are in your first trimester in Southern Louisiana, I would cover yourself in bug spray and wear long sleeves.

Not that hard to do.

That will change. Its an almost certainty. They know how these things spread with mosquitoes. There is data to back it up.

Its just about limiting the mosquitoes with spraying, introducing sterile mosquitoes into the environment, reducing standing water, etc. until a vaccine is produced.

You can 100% still travel to LA. I'm not saying don't. Just cover up and use spray when you can.

And don't travel to Brazil.

I'll take the word of my OB and his colleagues over you or the CDC.

If you say so, but that doesn't change the fact that it's not that way now.

Well with mosquito season coming upon us...I would say the situation is one at least worth watching, esp if you are trying to get pregnant.

A lot can happen in a few months. I ain't cancelling my trip now or anything. But if I was pregnant in my first trimester by then...and cases started popping up in the U.S. this summer from people that didn't leave the U.S....then yeah...maybe I don't absolutely have to go to my 20th HS reunion.

When I lived in LA...mosquitos freaking loved me. Even with bug spray they would still get me.

I know it's highly unlikely to catch Zika here in the states right now but my wife (which is due in August) have been taking precautions just in case. Neither of us go outside without mosquito repellant.

What's pretty scary is that the type of mosquito that is commonly present in the South and Southeast....is the same type of mosquito that spreads Zika.

They always say everything has a purpose...I have yet to find the good in a misquito. Nasty little things.

Another good precaution you can easily take is minimize the amount of scented stuff you use. Try to find lotions, shampoos, deodorant that is unscented if you can. Have your wife not wear perfume. Mosquitos are more attracted to the scents....anything that makes you smell "sweet" is attractive to them.

I'm so fricking tired of the yearly "pandemic" that the US populous is going to face.

SARS
Bird flu
Swine flu
West Nile
frickING EBOLA (and that was only months ago)

This shite is ridiculous. My list is far from complete and yet there is a pattern.

The pattern is this: NO ONE YOU KNOW HAS EVER CONTRACTED ANY OF THESE SO-CALLED PANDEMIC DESEASES and yet we still get fed a stead line of this bullshite by the media because they need a space filler story.

ETA: I'm not yelling at you, by nurse. I'm just ranting and you happen to be the one I responded to.

All of which are pretty dumb when it comes to threat in the US, especially Ebola, which was so incredibly blown out of proportion its unreal.

Zika has proven to be a more worthy adversary than any of those IMO. Its not the end of the world and should be handled logically, but it would be wise to be smart about mosquitoes in the South until a vaccine is out if you're trying to get pregnant or are in early stages of pregnancy.

And if you're those things, don't travel to Central and South America right now.

Just to calm you down a little bit, it is no where near tens of thousands.

Yet.

I read up to 5,000 in just Brazil.

ETA:

Excuse, actually 5,000 microcephaly cases caused by Zika in just Brazil

quote:

The number of confirmed and suspected cases of microcephaly in Brazil associated with the Zika virus remained stable at 4,908 in the week through April 23, just one case more than a week earlier, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

Actual people who have gotten Zika is 100,000

quote:

Brazil has registered 91,387 likely cases of the Zika virus from February until April 2, the health ministry said earlier on Tuesday, in its first national report on the epidemic.

The country's populous southeast, which includes Olympic city Rio de Janeiro, registered the most diagnoses of any region, with 35,505 likely cases.

Picture of microcephaly caused by Zika:
