I check my American Express on-line statement frequently, and there is a pending charge of $150 in addition to a $33 charge for the actual gas I purchased.

This is from a grocery store gas station, but I've never had anything like this before from the same station.

I've heard of debit cards being charged something in excess of the actual purchase but never a credit card.

I can't dispute the charge until it is actually posted.

ETA: That $150 "pending charge" is still on my credit card. I googled the question and found this:

Gas Stations - At the pump

When you present your Debit Card at a gas pump[I used a credit card!], the actual amount of gas you are purchasing is not available. In order for the system to provide an authorization an amount must be present. Since the amount of the purchase is not known until the gas has been pumped an amount determined by the gas station is transmitted. The amount can vary and may be as high as $100. [My pending charge is $150 - and the actual charge of $33 has already been posted!] In most cases the gas station will send an authorization for $1.00 for gas pump transactions. The estimated total could stay on the system for 1 – 3 business days until the clearing item for the amount actually charged reaches the Issuer (First Interstate Bank). You may become aware of the difference between the authorized amount and the actual amount through Telephone Banking, ATM inquiry or Internet Banking inquiry.

People, I'm getting pissed off!

I remember the 1st time I’ve used my AMEX to check into a hotel and get gas.

Is it for the same location? I've had a $150 charge come up but it was a location that I had never visited nor could have been at due to time of day. It got flagged as fraud, though that happened almost immediately.

Next time read the little signs on the pump that tell you your credit card may have a hold put on it. It goes away.

If it makes you feel any better my coworker got charged $1,250 leaving BTR parking lot the other day instead of $12.50

No that was correct. It is going into a fund for a study.

Some places put a hold on your card for some reason. It's odd that's its $150, since the max you can usually fill up is $99

The gas stations here all say it is your bank that places the hold, not the gas station.

Sounds like the pump had a skimmer. This is the Trojan Horse technique. You should close your account immediately or risk financial ruin.

this ^^^^^^

sometimes it shows $1 sometimes it shows $100 but its a "pending" charge which means that isnt the actual amount, its just a random number selected for the charge. when the charge actually goes through, then it reflects the correct amount you got.

everyone kinda freaks if they see that at first but wait for it to register as an actual charge and then verify if its the correct amount or not.

until then just relax and dont start calling the cops just yet

I go to lots of pumps all over, and it's very rare that you can get over $100 with a single card swipe

Getting gas? Is that what you call going to the strip club these days?

It's a hold, it will be gone with in 24 hours or less and your actual charge will be posted.

WTF is a great question. Sadly, I don’t have the answer.
