I just used that calculator for a comparable salary to mine in NYC. It was $100,000 more than I'm making now.

Well, in that case, you should be fine. Tons of stuff to do around there. I'd go for it.

On a $100k a year? No problem. Don't let people scare you about cost of living. If you were making 40 grand and had a family, then I'd tell you to reconsider. 100 grand and single? That's good livin right there.

As far as areas go, there are a lot of choices. San Jo and it's metro area is massive. Don't live on the East side. Great Mexican food, and a little dangerous (but not as bad as people make it out to be). Live downtown if you're a hipster like me that likes to go bars. Live in Campbell if you like downhome, slightly racist white people. Live in Los Gatos if you want to bang OT 8 MILFS and their daughters. Live in Santa Clara if you want to be bored and left alone. Live in Santa Cruz and commute if you like the beach and are a hippie. Don't live in Milpitas. It smells like arse.

100K ain't much in that part of the US..

Housing is the big expense. If you can live in a smaller place, and/or commute it's not bad. Single guy can live well on 100k there.

plus they have some water supply issues in that state that i'm not sure i'd want to plant myself in their situation right about now....

He's an engineer though...not like he's a farmer or works for a golf course. And he'll likely live in an apt...so no worries about a yard.

Isn't the state income tax in Cali like 13%?

Might want to factor that in compared to what you are making now. Assuming you are employed

Didn't say you were one. Just that your post hit me in the face with a bit of douchiness. I'll take it back if you're willing to share a beer with me though.

That is ridiculous. What's poor to you? Not being able to have a yacht and eat Kobe tomahawk ribeyes every night? 400k here would be beyond easy street.

100K and single you should be fine. Now it depends if you want to go experience Cali. If you're just starting out why not? You can bust your chops there and then move on when you gain experience. Good luck.

Got a job offer in San Jose for $100000/year as an Engineer. Since the cost of living is in a complete new league compared to Louisiana, is this salary worth anything or is it chump change compared to the the California standard for a single person?

Before I read any responses, let me remind you that two guys I graduated with, in the year 2002, went to San Jose with a signed contract and 85K a year ( a good sum back in that era). By 2006, they were bought out and jobless and moved back in with their parents. This I swear is the truth. By 2010, both of them were working jobs that were 25K less than those in San Jose.

I would simply remember that your jobs are made for college grads, but are expendable and immigrants ended up taking these two. If I were you, I'd think before I moved.
