Are you breathing a little easier tonight?
Please keep us updated. I think about your situation every day.

I'm so glad you posted and update. We are being sent to neurosurgery, too. We have an appointment with Dr. Bui at Ochsner next month and Dr. Joseph for a 2nd opinion a week later. Might rethink getting a 2nd from him. Prayers for your family and especially your little one.

What's it for? If it's for craniosynostosis, seems like you ought to skip the Dr. Joseph copayment and ask for a referral to Children's.

Threadjack, but I'd like to throw out a word for Dr Nanda in Shreveport. One of the best anywhere, and a very humble man.

No. "Congenital reduction deformation."

Although... I have to admit that part of me wonders if the endoscopic method is pushed harder due to the fact that this hospital is the only place in Louisiana that sells the post-op helmet.
I would have thought the exact same thing. And from my experience in the field, I would say there is an 80 to 90% chance you are correct.
But if your kid receives quality care, who really gives a shite, right? Good luck.

Happy to hear all is moving along for you. If I can help in any way let me know. Moving to New Orleans this week, near Claiborne and Carrollton. Just in case you and/ or your wife need a place to put your feet up for a while or the weathers too bad for the drive back.

ILikeLSUToo,
I promised an update on my coworker's same situation as yours. The baby boy had the surgery and all went well. Of course, the healing period was a little tough but that was only a couple days.
The helmet was not fitted perfectly at first. I believe that fitting the helmet is a bit of trial and error. The helmet was rubbing him at first, but they got that fixed and now much better.
Baby is healing well and the mom (my coworker) is very happy with how it all went down. They had the scope version too and not the invasive one. I'm told the healing for the scope procedure is way easier than the other.
Best of luck, friend. Hang in there. You are not alone.

How much of this thread have you read? We're happy with the doctors we have now.

Thanks for the update. I guess that's what the helmet checkup visits are so frequent at first, just to make sure it's not irritating them.

And why would you want to take a baby to an adult cancer treatment center?
Posted on 6/24/14 at 1:35 pm to Lokistale
MDA treats tons of kids! Since they have an entire facility dedicated to children, especially cancer, they obviously done a tone of head tumor/skull based surgeries of all kinds...point being, although there are some great docs around, why not consult with some if the best in the country if you have insurance and the means to get there? I've seen the difference first hand and it is not even close!
If the OP is happy with the current docs, fine. If he wants the best surge the top technology and facilities, those places and docs exist and consulting with them is worth the peace of mind.

Got a call from the hospital. His surgery has been officially scheduled: July 24, 8:30 am. They're going to tell us later on how long before the surgery we have to stop feeding him. I know it's necessary, but god is that going to be a long ride to the hospital. Kid eats like a monster.

That may well be true, but they treat kids with CANCER!! just like St. Jude. The OP's kid has craniosynostosis, he does not have cancer!

Prayers for you and your family.

And the baby will receive excellent care from those who only care for pediatric patients. Makes a big difference.

Well, it's happening tomorrow. Wife gave a unit of blood in case he needs a transfusion. Surgery is 8:30, but we have to be there at 6am. He can't have anything but clear liquids after 2:30am. Luckily, we're staying with my brother in New Orleans tonight, so we won't have to make the hour and a half drive with a screaming, starving baby in the car.
I think it's finally hit me that my 3-month-old is going under the knife.
Happy thoughts/prayers for Zachary
