That stat is quite interesting and is also cherry picked by the media and politicians.
The definition of mass shooting tends to change, but most seem to define it as 2-3 or more people being shot. If that's the case, then Chicago probably has more mass shootings than anywhere in the U.S. and they're carried out mostly by blacks. They tend to use the "300 mass shootings last year" stat when talking about gun control but, for obvious reasons, they always blame white people for mass shootings. The numbers just don't jive.
