Would You Pluck The Sean McVay Tree For a HC?

I know a few years ago, this was the trendy thing to do. Find a young Offensive coach that came up under McVay, and let him lead your franchise out of offensive purgatory. Do you think this is still a tried and true method?

No I would interview several coaches and pick the right one, regardless of what "tree" they come from, because I find that to be completely irrelevant

Ben Johnson, Bobby Slowik or Brian Johnson. That’s where you start your search.

It’s the John Gruden and Kyle Shanahan tree. Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan both worked for Gruden. Since becoming head coaches, teams have pulled from both of those staffs. Both offensive and defensive.

Think it goes without saying, you don't hire someone just because he worked for someone that had some success. But it would be foolish to not consider anyone from the McVay & Shannahan tree that have shown some success at their respective positions.

I wouldn't say its completely irrelevant when that's what many of the successful NFL offenses are now running
now I'm not hiring a guy solely because he's from that tree but its certainly something to consider amongst your pool of candidates

Shanahan tree is the way to go. Kyle is still killing it in San Fran and Mike McDaniel has Miami rolling, and fixed Tua in the process.

Don't forget DeMeco Ryan, who has the Texans on a roll. I'm still up in the air about Robert Saleh but he has a really good defense.

You right. I was just thinking in terms of offensive coaches.

McVay = Shanahan tree

Bobby Slowik, who is the OC for the Texans, spent 6 years with San Fran as their passing coordinator. He would be a great pick, from the Shanahan tree, if you're speaking on Offensive terms. He's doing great things in Houston right now.
