Same here. I think he's gonna be solid & would've loved him in our system. Only real complaint I had during the draft.

Even though many Saints fans have no idea, Strief is one of the best RTs in the game. He hasn't given any indication that he's falling off, either. He is under contract for 4 more years at a pretty reasonable rate.

This is not the issue. We KNOW he's a good RT.
PFF:
Strief: +10.9 PFF (1076 snaps)
Armstead: +6.0 PFF (850 snaps)
Brees: +32.6 PFF (1158 snaps)

The issue is this:
Harris: -17.5 PFF (393 snaps) -> dead last on our offense

I totally get that, but you don't use a top 15 pick on depth especially when you have a very limited window due to your QBs age.

I love the Anthony pick, but I was hoping we would have drafted two potential starters or at least two guys that will be seeing the field a lot.

I agree, but it could have the biggest impact on wins in the next 2 years. I don't see us winning any games with Harris playing, and it is likely that 1 of our 2 tackles will go down with injury.

I think we would have gone DT if our guy was there, but one could argue that you get a lot of value out of a tackle on a rookie deal.

We saw our season go into the gutter VERY fast after Armstead got hurt. Then we sold Graham for an all-pro center and 1st round pick. Finally, we see OTs in OTAs catching passes

I think the Peat pick after those two events tells us:
1. Saints will run a 3rd tackle set very often (like 60% of the snaps often) for run blocking and pass protection.
2. Gives us a solid player given the injury/dinged up history of Strief and Armstead.

I hate to be the debbie downer, but since Strief has been a starter, he has always missed some playing time due to injury. Having a solid backup will ease the transition when he does have to sit out.

Link? I'm not saying you're wrong, I just don't remember this being the case.

LINK

2011: 11 games
2012: 12 games
2013: 15 games
2014: 16 games

Not counting the multiple reports of him being injured, seeing him on the sideline and having a backup go in, etc.

He gets dinged up often and his age isn't going to be helping him heal any faster.

i think the 2011 absence by Strief is really the only thing to get worried about. Charles Brown took his place that year and then crapped himself vs. the Rams.

frick 2012.

2013, he was the one who got beat by Ahmad Brooks in the 49ers game. But Brooks decided to close line Drew and kept the drive alive.

so haha on that one!!!!

I can appreciate everyone having positivity about the Peat pick, but lets face reality-- it looks like at this point is was a clear miss. We needed defense, defense, defense, and we pick offensive line. The FO has done some wonders, but before we start applauding pick-ups like Spiller, lets see some success. A #13 pick in the draft should not be a hit or miss at this point in training camp. That guy should be sticking out at the very least as someone to look forward to in the upcoming season.

At this point? It's day 1. There is a reason tackles are coveted, it isn't easy

Uh, we def needed offensive line. The question is did we do enough. Did you even watch last year?

Protecting drew and running the ball will mask a lot of defensive issues.

We've had major issues at tackle the last few years when our starters went down. Last year, our offense was pathetic without them. So while he won't start, he could save our season

Should of drafted Bud Dupree IMO

I feel our lack of pass rush is more important that our lack of run game and protection. Lets not forget Ingram actually had a good year

And yet we still struggled in goal line situations taking points off the board.

We finished 9th in ypa and 13th in rushing yards. We can do better and need to. we also lost our guard.

I didn't really like the pick since he's a backup year 1, but I understand it. Despite your hatred of Brees, if he goes down we're done.

Of course i watched and agree that we have issues on the offensive line that needed to be addressed. Picking Peat at 13 I do not believe was the best way to address it. Collins late I believe would have addressed it considering he stays out of jail which I understand was a gamble. Even if we didnt know of the beach incident at draft day, we knew about the stripper issue and possible suspension by the nfl. That being said, stocking up on defense I think was the smater move. We did improve our line with Unger before the draft although it doesnt solve all the problems. Hopefully spencer and the pineapple express and moving Jordan pays dividends.

And whether it is Peat, Armstead, or Strief I believe Tackle eligible play calls will be utilized a lot in the redzone to help change that.

Guys in his defense, you know the LT and RT is a position when youre on an island all by yourself. Its obvious that he went be starting at the season opener, but in time he'll get better. Let him get use to playing against lineman thats NFL ready vs. lineman thats was barely college ready. Give him time.
