If he is as good as advertised (who knows) and you can get a 5th year then when he wants the big contract you let him go.
5 years of a TE stud and someone else over pays after.

If Payton wants a TE with our first pick, I feel he will drop down in the early 2nd for this guy and hopefully add another decent pick.

Nbd, it's not gonna happen. What helps this team most right now is an additional defensive playmaker, probably DE or LB.

A productive TE would help this team tremendously. Our 3rd down conversion rate was horrible last year and we lack a reliable redzone target outside of Thomas. So TE is a huge hole on this roster right now.

Would rather just trade back if we take TE. Pick up an extra 3rd along with Hurst

I got a gut feeling they may move up a few spots to land Harold Landry.

True. But they were #1 in the league in 2016 with the same exact TE's. Last year was an anomaly for the Saints relative to their history under Payton. Yes, Fleener's production was down from 2016, but probably not THAT significantly. The bigger drop off was in the slot (Snead). Now part of that was the use of Kamara in the passing game, but was TE the biggest issue? Maybe not.

I think people might be overvaluing the necessity of an all world TE because they are comparing everyone to Graham as a Saint. The Saints may not EVER get that kind of production out of a TE again. Just a case of right player with right QB at right time (no true #1 WR).

Fleener is NEVER going to be Jimmy Graham, and it's likely no one else who the Saints could pick this year would be as well. Maybe the better move is to upgrade with an explosive playmaker at the slot WR (Moore, Kirk, etc.) and hunt for a serviceable TE later.

No not really because we had that same production out of Shockey and Watson so I dont think that's it. We need that guy that can go up and get it in the endzone. We only had 9 passing TDs last year in the Redzone which is low. Now some of that is because of our phenominal running game but you need to be able to throw it when its needed. I just personally think if you had that big body guy that can overpower everyone and go up and get the ball(Goedert) it would make us unstopable.

This may be the case and I'm not disagreeing but in my opinion of WR ranking in this draft that could help us I would say 1.Moore 2.Chark and no I'm nowhere near a homer. The addition of Meredith should help a ton also especially on 3rd down. We were ranked 22nd on 3rd down conversions last year and thats just unacceptable.

Certainly would've helped in that first game against Atlanta.
