The million dollar question. Why hasn't he been more involved in the receiving game plan by now. He's obviously super talented, can catch, has breakaway speed and runs crisp routes. Instead we're picking up anything that slightly resembles a receiver. Any insights out there. TIA

He’s soft. It’s so obvious when watching him in game. In the Bucs game he was supposed to crack down on a linebacker and looked like he whiffed on purpose leading to Ingram getting crushed in the backfield by the guy he was supposed to be blocking. It seems like he drops passes when he knows a hit is coming.

This may change in an offseason of bulking up.

Watch in upcoming games he just doesn’t seem to be physical at all. Thomas needs to teach him a thing or two about being a physical receiver.

For a rookie 3rd round pick he hasn't been terrible. We've gotten spoiled here expected 3rd round and later to come in and be all world

He had a 6-game stretch where he had 21 catches 353 yards 4 td. He then missed a game bc of injury, and hasn't caught a ball yet. Maybe he isn't 100%

Part injury, part being a rookie

Rewatching the game right now and just saw this. He took a horrible angle. Looked like a defender who got shook out of his cleats.

Yeah I mean it looks like something those young guys would do in high school in garbage time when they were scared to hit a player. It just reminded me a lot of that.

He took some big shots in his big breakout game. I know he kind of got roughed up a little but since then he has just looked somewhat scared.

Patience fellas...

I think he’s been forced into a bigger role than maybe he is ready for with all the injuries at WR.

He’s shown game breaking ability, but he’s also shown that he’s still has a lot to learn. I don’t think it’s because he’s “soft”. I don’t think you get to this level, and start 6 games as a rookie for one of the best teams in the league by being “soft”.

He has 1 drop on 35 targets...

He’s a very young player in a difficult offense for his position. He’s doing just fine and has had a baptism by fire for the most part. Not sure what you expect from a 3rd rd rookie.

We drafted him to be Michael Thomas, Jr. He is progressing very slowly.

He dropped the WR screen in the Dallas game and then another in the Bucs game.
However I think he is just lacking a little confidence right now. I expect him to bounce back

I agree with many of the comments already posted. To me, Smith has not looked the same since he injured his foot, an impediment to even the best and most seasoned receivers. If he cannot push off or plant hard enough, he'll have trouble getting separation and making sharp cuts. To be fair, Smith simply dropped arguably the most "noticeable" pass: a sure touchdown against the Cowboys. In my recollection, Saints' tight ends have dropped the lion's share this season.

That’s not true. He dropped one in cowboys and bucs games. Idk where you get your facts from??? Those are just two off top of my head.

Hmm yeah I recall both.
When I checked his stats they counted 1 drop.
Maybe the one against TB wasn’t counted..
To be fair, it felt like everyone had a drop against Dallas.
Okay so he has two drops on 35 targets instead of one...
Regardless, to say hes had a problem catching, even in traffic, is a mischaracterization I think.
We are just remembering recent weeks, and ignoring how solid he was for 12 weeks.

Interesting how you keep proclaiming him “soft” because of one play but ignore the TD he caught where he went over the middle and got sandwiched by a safety and corner but still stuck his head in and made the catch. You’re probably one of those guys that called Colston soft too
