I’m worried about the Saints without him though, the drama between Gayle and the kids could get ugly again
No doubt.

Literally nobody has forgotten
But sometimes people can make up for past transgressions, believe it or not. The money he donated to Tulane and Loyola and all around the city, keeping the Pelicans here, and just being a good dude is part of his legacy too.

So death absolves him of trying to take the Saints away from a hurricane ravaged city?
Part of that was because MANY people believed NO would never come close to what it was after that. After Tag talked to him about keeping the team here and helping revive the city he had a change of heart.
Him deciding to keep the Saints here in the end was a big part of what helped this city return to it's former glory.

No but bringing Dixie Beer back where it belongs helps a lot.

Didn't he take precautions last year to make sure Gayle got the team, and that Rita would kick rocks?

Pouring out an ice cold Dixie for him tonight.

and on the eve of victory too. Damn. I dont know what I'm least looking forward to, the Rita/Gayl fallout or the onslaught of "should the Mannings buy the Saints?!" threads to follow.

There is zero legal recourse left for Rita and Co. to get the team. They never had ownership shares in the first place and the league will never approve them as owners even if some miracle bestowed the opportunity upon them.
The league would buy the team at value at that point and start looking for buyers.
So absolutely 10000000% no chance Rita is ever in charge.
Unless Gayle suddenly wants to sell, she is the owner end of story.

Via @katherinesayre, Tom Benson intended to leave ownership of the Saints and Pelicans to his wife, Gayle.

He did. The issue is that Rita still is entitled to a dollar figure that is equal to the ownership value she would have inherited. Not sure if they have to sell the team to fulfill that obligation
