The NFL has approved having just one roster cutdown, meaning teams will trim rosters from 90 to 53 after the final preseason game.
The date this year: Tuesday, August 29.

So roughly 1200 players get cut that day, then have to pass through waivers over the next 24 hours. In that time teams have to figure out who got cut, if they are better than what they have, and place waiver claims on who they want, or gamble on the player passing through waivers. Once waiver claims are announced the next day, teams have to cut another player for each one they claim, plus cut another player for everyone they sign as a free agent. And then those players cut have to pass through waivers, and so forth, and so on.
I would hate to be in charge of personnel that week!

Saints FO does better than most with UDFA. You shell out the money and don't think about it. Compared to salaries its chump change. Saints go in early and don't play around with the dollars. We do well after drafts.

Been that way no?
Didn't it change from the slow cut downs to one date a couple years ago?

You need a small staff doing nothing but preparing/scouting for that 24-48 hour period.

It doesn't say you can't make cuts prior to that, only that you don't have to be to 53 until the end. I'm sure there will be veteran cuts to "allow the chance to catch on with another team."
One interest thing, however, could be more preseason trades for teams to need to fill needs because of injuries, etc.

I like it. Pure mayhem
Used to have time to watch the cuts, and pick some guys up that would improve the roster by opening day.
Now, it's going to be a feeding frenzy, like someone else said. But it's hard to get those guys ready in less than a week, and you have less time to evaluate and decide whether some dude the Seahawks cut is better than your own backup... and if so, if you can sign him before the Packers do.

Yep - no way teams will wait till that one and only cut day to fill in an unexpected need. You are going to need a code book to figure out who owns the rights to 5th and 6th round draft picks.
