Mr. Benson bought the team in 1985. We are in Mr. Benson's 33rd year as owner. He inherited Bum Phillips as coach, Saints went on to a 5-11 season, Bum was fired mid year and Wade Phillips finished year as interim coach.

Since 1985, Mr. Benson has hired only 4 head coaches. Jim Mora, Mike Ditka, Jim Haslett, and Sean Payton. This is the 32nd year of only having hired 4 coaches during this time span. I don't think Mr. Benson and the Saints get enough credit like other franchises who have had similar stability over the past 3 decades.

Previous to Mr. Benson (1967-1984), Saints have only had 2 non losing 8-8 seasons. First came in 1979, last 1983. We had an overall record of 78-176 which amounted to a .307 winning percentage, zero playoff appearances, zero division titles.

Since Mr. Benson has owned Saints, The Saints have had a 267-253 record. This amounts to a .518 winning percentage in regular season play. We've had 10 playoff appearances in 32 years. Looking for our 11th in 33 years. 5 first place divisional finishes. 7-9 in post season play with a Super bowl trophy obviously.

If you remove the 4 seasons we've fired a coach (Phillips '84, Mora '96, Ditka '99, Haslet '05 (katrina), we've only had 2 seasons during this 29 year stretch where we've won less than 7 games. These both were Mike Ditka's first two seasons. Yes the Ditka hire turned out to be pretty disastrous but you can't say Benson didn't try with that hire and hire a proven big named coach at the time.

Mr. Benson has done a pretty stand up job on turning around the worst franchise in the NFL up until the mid 80's.

You mean won less than 7 games. We’ve lost less than 7 many times.

Benson used a weak loophole & claimed breach of contract with the state so he could move them to San Antonio when New Orleans was hurting.

Even Tagliabue thought it was a bush league move.

I forgave him but I can never forget the facts.

Definitely.

And it makes me like Tagliabue (even more than I already do in comparison to the Goodell "Error") in that Tag stood up for the city when it was unstable which brought stability to both the city & the franchise.

But we've only had two owners to grade, and John Mecom's era was arguably the worst NFL ownership era of all time, so Benson's era is infinitely better, if only by default. Hell, Mecom's Era makes current Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam look like the Pats Robert Craft Era.

Great post. I remember those disastrous years prior to 86 and always wishing they could do better. Never wore the bag but knew many that did.

I'm a lifelong Saints fan, 34 years old, and this blows my mind. I did not realize this.

Benson is a joke of an owner and is completely clueless about football.

Any periods of success during his ownership period have been coincidental.

From the 1993 season through the 2005 season, a total of 13 seasons, the Saints made the playoffs ONCE. I doubt any other NFL franchise did worse.

That's not always a bad thing. Would you rather the Saints be owned by an owner that frequently interferes with the day to day operations? That's how a franchise can quickly become a joke.

1. Buffalo Bills 17 seasons without making the playoffs.

2. Cleveland Browns 14 seasons without making the playoffs.

3. Cincinnati Bengals 14 seasons without making the playoffs.

4. STL/LA Rams 12 seasons without making the playoffs.

The longest droughts the Saints have had under Benson were 7 seasons, 5 seasons, and 3 seasons (current drought). Things could have been a hell of a lot worse.

its a staggering statistic for sure.

and then when you add the 3 yrs before and 1 yr after, then all of a sudden its 5 years we made playoffs out of 17.
