I may have heard it used once or twice before, but why is the term ‘too cute’ so associated with Sean Payton? I’m not asking about his offense, his gimmicky plays, none of that.

The term itself, “too cute”. It is almost exclusively used and associated with Payton. Why? This is more of an language question more than a football question. It’s weird to me.

Anyway, just got back from the Dome and it was electric. Who Dat! 10-1 baby!!!

Cute is a derivative of acute which one meaning is synonymous with shrewd or clever.

Sean tries to get too clever sometimes when the simple would suffice.

That was definitely an issue early in his tenure in New Orleans. Especially with the game on the line. I think he picks his spots better now.

He wants to use gadget plays in decisive situations and it's blown up before. The double reverse Reggie Bush nonsense literally cost us a game against Tampa Bay.

In crunch time do what you do well, you don't have to appear to be a mad scientist/super genius all the time.

Payton makes stupid calls a lot. Still. Think the Ravens game where he goes for it like 3 times and converts and then shits the bed in the red zone with some “they’ll never expect this” calls.

That’s one of the two things that drives me crazy about him. The other is his WTF? coaches challenges and wasting timeouts in general.

Don’t overinterpret. He’s still my coach.

Spot on.
I do think this may be his best coaching year.

I agree.
On side kick in the Super Bowl was one that did work.

It came from Bill Parcells when asked about Sean Payton. Bill Parcells said he is a great coach but he likes to get too cute with his play calling.

How dare our coach try to outsmart the other coaches!

There’s a difference between play action on 4th and 1 and flea-flicker bomb on 4th and 1.

Payton is occasionally the latter.

There’s the answer I was looking for. I know his behavior that causes them to say it, it was the fact that it’s pretty much only said in refeference to him.
