In retrospect yes, but you dont get to assign intentions to the franchise, then condemn them and the player chosen for mortgaging the future. They did not part with those assets in order to target this player. That trade was strategic and asset value driven.

Now, the Washington deal otoh... I wont stop you from bashing that.

It’s not the intention or the player, it’s the cost.

The cost was paid for arbitrary assets prior to the draft that had equivalent value.

I just think its dishonest to say "we gave up X" for Chris Olave, and "he better be a multiple time all-pro". The only thing we gave up for Olave was 16, 98 and 120.

So what about the 2024 2nd rounder?

*ETA: or are we playing the game where "swap" means that we don't actually look at what was exchanged?

the value chart comparison is pretty even for the Philly deal, so you have to assume the Saints have a "win now" approach and believe they are 2 or 3 upgrades away from a deep run. The deal could be a big loser if they suck next year and those future assets turn into higher round picks in deeper drafts. We'll have to wait and see of the gamble pays off. Yall are also completely ignoring the fact that the Philly deal yielded Penning and Jackson.

sighs... The value of the assets are arbitrary in that they are subjective and based largely on the teams' goals. It can take on virtually any form, and its collective value is assigned by the parties negotiating. The trade also has secondary value tied to the performance of the players chosen with the picks. The Saints can "lose" the trade on spot value, then in 5 years have yielded better players with those assets and be considered the clear winner.

This isnt hard.

The value of the assets

You are afraid to just call them draft picks because you know NFL draft picks have known assigned value based on the number of the pick.

No one is speaking of the secondary value of the trade. That is relatively unimportant right now.

I’m not afraid of shite. Teams use pick value estimates all the time, but they are like assholes and mock drafts. Everyone has one and most of them stink. The assets aren’t even always picks. There could be players, cash, even coaches. There isn’t some absolute draft currency that is rigidly followed. This thread is proof. You have a great debate going here around stockpiling picks versus trading up, needs vs BPA, and so on.

And the ultimate performance of the players taken with those picks isn’t relatively unimportant. That’s an insane statement to make.

Results oriented thinking.

You have to judge the decision in the present time it was made.

Right. That’s why I called results a secondary value. And that’s also why I refuse to drape the Philly trade around Olave’s neck.

In a 16 game season he’d be on pace for 1300 yards. And I think he’d have better stats with a better qb situation…

Obviously dude can play but he just wasn’t needed and picking him will hurt the saints for a long time.

Olave is on pace for

91 catches
1401 yards
6 TDs

Kupp, Adams, Chase, Jefferson, & Samuel were the only WRs to top 1400+ yards last season

Olave is an absolute stud and an off-season of putting on muscle and getting stronger will only make him better.

If the saints are going to be dumb with trading picks at least they got one very good player in return.

He hasn’t been bad but he’s wracked up garbage time yards with the team trying to come back in games.

And even if he’s good he will still never be worth what they gave up for him
