The only way Payton returns

Is on a trial basis for him. Bridge the gap and get rid of the two years remaining on his contract then he open up with a new team with all the picks in hand and ready to go.
This works if the job that he wants does not open. Say San Diego makes a run or Denver doesn't fire their guy because they do not have the picks after the Russell trade.

Is in a fantasy world.

Or he sits at Fox for 10 million a year, doesn't further tarnish his career record with the horrible contracts, and really no way to help the roster partly because of him, wait until his contract expires then gets the job he wants, have his picks, a happy wife and 20 million richer.

Some internet lawyers think his contract time isn't ticking right now, they don't think he can just sit 3 years and go wherever without compensation to the Saints. I don't know if it is true but it sure is interesting if that is the case.

Both L.A. teams and Dallas will have new coaches by then unless they win a SB
Payton will not want to wait that long anyway

Sign Payton and Brady and win the Super Bowl and both retire

The main point is if a deal is done in 23 it will be worth more than a deal done in 24 and 2025 most likely means nothing.
I think it means that the Saints still own the rights for 2023 and 2024 after 2024 they do not have the rights for anything.

I'd be willing to give him a 1 year "prove it" deal.

This doesn't make any sense. WHAT would cause his time to start ticking?

Sean Payton is the most impulsive and impatient frick on earth. He’s coaching somewhere in 2023.

This is from an article right after the 2021 season.
As Rapoport notes above, Payton has three years remaining on his deal after signing his latest extension in 2019.
The Saints technically hold his rights until 2024 if Payton wants to return to coaching. Should another team want to sign him during that time span, they would have to “compensate” NOLA somehow, whether through draft picks or money.
