Not an attorney, but wouldn’t the specific terms in the contract (that usually isn’t public) determine this. In other words, was the contract a 5 year extension, absent specific dates, or was it through 2025?
If it’s through 2025, and Payton doesn’t perform for those 3 years; does he owe the Saints some “consideration” or is giving up his salary enough?
