The no starters in the preseason is giving me The Greenbrier Resort PTSD

What you do in the lead up to the season matters. Shough and the WRs have no rhythm or feel for the game right now.

I don't think Detroit is really doing anything all that exotic on defense.

Your post is optimistic and assumes the problems you are seeing are just that we played it safe in preseason.
In reality, Shough looks very bad. It has been consistent.
It doesn’t look like a matter of just not being sharp.

After the first 12 games, we will be ready and go .500 after that.

It was a clown decision by a guy who appears to be a clown coach.

All of those things can result from "lack of sharpness."
If being out of practice didn't effect all aspects of a play, players wouldn't practice everything. Even speed is subject to not being sharp.
