Loomis should have signed him to a contract sooner. This is an obvious cover up.

@RapSheet: The #Saints announced a five-year deal for OT Zach Strief this morning, and source says it's for $20.5M with $8.4M guaranteed. Solid.
So basically only the first 2 years are guaranteed I like this signing.

Strief, you're a stand-up guy.
Loomis,

Yeah, he'll be here under that contract for 2-3 years and then be cut. I'm sensing a trend in this 3 year number...

What was his contract like before this one?

You're right...it was an impulse use.....I'm sorry for anyone I may have offended.

From PFF, an obscure sports stats website I frequent:
quote:
RE-SIGNING! The Saints have secured themselves a right tackle for next year and it’s one of their own. The team announced they’ve brought back Zach Strief for five years. Strief was our top ranked right tackle in 2013 thanks largely down to his fantastic pass blocking where he allowed just 33 combined sacks, hits and hurries all year long, helping him to a pass blocking efficiency score that was seventh best of all tackles. Drew Brees is a very happy man right now.

Huge sign imho. Teams have to be able to sign key veterans they have investments in that know the system. Obviously you can't keep everyone, but this is huge....I agree, Brees is breathing a little easier today.

while I was perusing PFF, their take on the Byrd signing-
Probably the only elite, blue chip player available in free agency this season, Byrd is one of those rare and coveted free safeties with the range, discipline and instincts to play as a Cover-1 safety. In the last two seasons Byrd has only earned a negative coverage grade in seven times and the lowest of those was a -1.0 grade against the Texans in Week 9 last season. His last “red” coverage (of only four in his career) came back in 2011. The only thing holding this deal back from a higher grade is the sheer dollar value.

Strief, 30, took over as the Saints' starting right tackle in 2011 and had his best season to date in 2013. ESPN.com's John Clayton named Strief a first-team All-Pro at right tackle, and Pro Football Focus had him graded as the top right tackle in the league last year.
The 6-foot-7 Strief played at a high level in both 2011 and 2013, when he allowed only three sacks in 15 starts. However, he did struggle in 2012 -- in part due to a nagging groin injury. A seventh-round draft pick out of Northwestern in 2006, Strief was elected as a captain each of the past two years.

As much as everyone bashed him during the season, I remember you always posting him ranking as pretty much the best RT in the league all last year.
I think our last three games are much more indicative of next years production than anything else. It shocked me how well we were able to run the ball. And when we can do that, we can actually have a realistic PA game. Which always infuriated me we still pretended to have before that
