Sometimes you just have to be grateful for what we’ve done

It’s been 50 years since the Chiefs last went to the Super Bowl. People have been born and died within that rage never seeing their team win it all. We are extremely lucky to have seen our Saints not only get to one, but win it. It’s so rare.
And while it’s disappointing we have had good teams and can’t seem to get over the hump lately, to be able to sit back and say “we actually did it” still makes me satisfied as a fan.

When any objective observer analyzes the history of every component part of the New Orleans Saints franchise, he reaches the conclusion that the Saints were fortunate to have even one Superbowl Lombardi Trophy.
Why? Because this franchise has never had superlative and championship-sustaining talent, work-product, continuity and stability within ALL components of an NFL franchise. The components are not limited to these: front office, general manager, owner, head coach, player-personnel acquisition and disposition, coordinator of offense, coordinator of defense, strength and conditioning.
These are all very important component parts. It is arguable that the Saints have NEVER, even for one single season, have achieved superlative work product from ALL of these component parts of the franchise.
That's why the 2009 Championship season is so special.

We should have won the SB in 2011 and 2018 seasons.
Or at least gone to one more. This group has underachieved fairly significantly. We’re all grateful for the 1 that we got, but the only 2 seasons the Saints achieved success in line with their talent was 2006 and 2009. That’s frustrating.

Delete yourself. Getting robbed last year by the refs is NOT underachieving, especially not "fairly significantly." This season they chose a really bad time to have a bad game, and much of that I attribute to showing up expecting to win rather than being focused on earning it. You can say they underachieved in that game, but going 13-3 is NOT underachieving "fairly significantly."
You idiots need to go find another team to follow, because you're all embarrassments to this one.

Cogent and concise.
Well done lad. Well done.

The Saints definitely could and should have appeared in two more Super Bowls.
However, I remember Times in the 70’s and 80’s when I would have been ecstatic to be told we would win the Sper Bowl that we did.
That season was almost surreal.

We had enough talent to appear in 4 or 5 total SB’s since Brees was here and to win 2 more and I get trashed for pointing it out.
Ridiculous. We’ve squandered so much talent since 2009 and have only appeared in ONE NFCCG. That’s the most mindboggling stat - ONE NFCCG when we’ve been the first or second best team in the NFC for at least 4 of the 10 seasons. Arguably most underachieving team in the league during this span.

Fans of the other 31 teams would probably go with overachieved

I’m happy we are good during the regular season and it’s fun, etc. the last 3 playoffs have really been gut punches tho and have kind of ruined the fun.
All we needed was a 2nd SB appearance to keep the lighthearted feeling going IMO.

After this year 12 of the 32 teams will have won a Super Bowl since 2000, with another 7 different ones making an appearance.
It's not that rare.

Even the 2009 Saints were flawed in ways that often prevent a SB-winning year for a franchise.
The other years you mention when the Saints "should" have won? Also flawed in ways that often prevent a SB-winning year.
I forgot to mention a very important factor for ANY franchise to have an SB-winning year: you will need a healthy portion of Good Luck. Goddess Fortuna MUST shine on your franchise that year in which you win the SB.

The last few seasons dont bother me at all
However, 2014-2016 was an absolute waste of Brees

How about the other half dozen or so opportunities they fricked away during the Brees era?

that's called playing to your talent, since the roster sucked those years.

agree, but they did fire pretty much the whole scouting dept.

Pro-actively evaluating the work-product potential of all of your staff and making changes BEFORE the poor performers cause you to have three straight 7-9 seasons is simply not what this franchise has ever done.
The Saints were lucky to have Payton and Brees fall into the organization. I can't think of a single thing that the Owner or any GM has done to shape the roster with a long-term view of sustaining a string of SB appearances.
Until the Saints got Ireland, the player-personnel acquisitions and dispositions were not what you'd see with an annual SB contender.
This franchise has never had ALL of the pieces in place at the same time. Probably never will.
