I began watching the Saints when I was about 5 years old. That was in 1973. I know Archie Manning played on some crappy teams then and I remember seeing him play but wasn't old enough to know if he was good or not. This is what I want to know: Was he really that great of a QB or was he just mired in mediocrity because of who he had around him? Honest opinions please.

Never saw the man play but I think he won MVP one year and made it to the Pro Bowl, right?

i would compare him to.......say......jake delhomme. he wasn't extraordinary, just stayed with the same lousy team.

Great? Probably not. Good? Absolutely.
Made 2 Pro-bowls (i think it was 2) from a horrid Saints club that never finished above .500 while he was here.
ETA: and for many years he took a beatting due to poor OL play. Never complained publicly. Of course when they did finish .500, it was because of horrid defense and pretty good offense.

I don't think we'll ever really know.
In college he was a superstar. But, he was almost more of a Tim Tebow type in college. He was much bigger than most of the linebackers he faced and he ran a lot.
With the Saints, his stats were horrible. On the other hand, I've seen interviews with his contemporaries (Bert Jones, Bradshaw, Staubach) and they all think he would have been a HOFer had he played on a good team.
Then again, the QB is the most important player on a team and his play/work habit can change the course of an entire team. Clearly Archie did not do this.

I hope you're not talking about the Panthers.

He seems to have pretty good genes.

Great college QB that carried an average Ole MIss team to a lot of victories. As an NFL QB, he didn't have as much supporting talent as needed to win. Plus, he got beat up almost every game and missed a few seasons due to the injuries.

Archie had a few good years in the late 70s. 2 pro bowls and an MVP year in 78. But his overall numbers weren't very impressive.
What endeared him to Saints fans was the way he played the game. Despite being a part of the worst managed pro franchise at that time with limited talent around him, he went out and gave it his all every game, every snap. I'd love to know how many times he was sacked. He has to be up near the top of that list. And that's back in the day when they didn't protect the QB.

Put it like this, he played for all those years and took a beating most of those years like Farve took in the NFCCG. He was a warrior. The only real time we had talent on offense was in 1979 and we were unreal that year. Only problem was our defense was also unreal that year, just in the opposite way. That year we had Wes Chandler and Ike Harris as the wide outs, Henry Childs at TE and Chuck Muncie and Tony Galbreath as our running backs. Then the drug scandal with Mike Strahan hit and Chandler started having migraines that disappeared once he got traded to San Diego. Other than that the dude scrambled for his life and still managed to be productive. People forget why he was thought of so highly by old school Saints fans.

I think he taught a whole generation of New Orleans kids how to lose with grace and dignity. He never blamed anyone else. In every interview I ever saw him give after a loss, he always took the blame and never called out a single lousy team mate.
And, the few times he did win, he always deflected the glory to his team mates.

He was also the highest paid NFL player at one time. I know that is not necessarily indicative of greatness but he was ranked on up there to receive such a high salary. Seems like about $600K one year which was a fortune at that time.

He was a great college QB at Ole Miss.
When he was drafted by the saints, he was on a horrible team. The players were just horrible. I heard something on the radio yesterday. He best year for the number of sack was something like 47. 47 sacks was his best year for his OL. WOW! Combine Manning and Brees's sacks for this year and you don't even get to 40.
My guess is that he would have fared better if he was on a better team.

That particular phrase makes little sense.
If you're suggesting that a quarterback can magically inspire second and third tier NFL players (and, for the most part, this is who made up the majority of the Saints' roster while Manning was there) to play like top tier players over an entire season, you're kind of silly.

He was great at running for his life and making good throws while running. Very much unlike Peyton. Peyton will fall flat on the ground before he takes a shot. Not even Eli does that!! ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconbanghead.gif)

Oh, great, the Poli-Board's idiot savant makes his way over to the Saints Forum.
Go away, Corky. The adults are trying to have a conversation.

Archie is probably the most overrated player ever. He was completely average. Nothing special what so ever. Both his sons are better than he ever was.

Archie was one of the first mobile quarterbacks. They didn't exist back then. His talent was underutilized because he was ahead of his time. He was equivalent to a Steve Young or Troy Aikman in style and talent.
